MOUNT VERNON, Va. -
Everitt L. Miller, former director
of Longwood Gardens, recently
became president of the American
Horticultural Society at the
Society’s 41st Annual Meeting in
San Francisco.
Miller has devoted almost 40
years to his interest in promoting
horticulture in America. A native
of Brooklyn, N.Y., he graduated
from the State University of New
York with a degree in landscape
design.
Miller began his work in the field
of horticulture as manager of the
W.R. Coe estate, Planting Fields
now a public arboretum ad
ministered by the State University
of New York and presently
serves as a trustee for the Planting
Fields Foundation.
In 1956, Miller went to Longwood
Gardens in Kennett Square to
serve as head of the department of
horticulture. He was later
promoted to the position of
assistant director of Longwood and
became director of the gardens on
Sept. 1,1979.
As director of Longwood, Miller
was responsible for overseeing the
operation of the 1,000-acre gar
dens, which were originally
created by the late Pierre S. du
Pont. Longwood contains a historic
arboretum, four acres of con
servatories and greenhouses, an
outdoor theater, spectacular
fountain “gardens” and extensive
specialized plant collections

Miller Named American Horticultural Society President
ranging from rock gardens,
topiary displays and demon
stration vegetable gardens to
perennial and annual borders.
Miller retired as director of
Longwood Ga dens in Oct. 1984.
In addition lo his administrative
contributions to horticulture,
Miller has written many articles of
interest to both professional and
amateur horticulturists, delivered
lectures throughout the country
and is an accredited horticultural
judge. He has also served on the
board of directors of several
national organizations, including
the American Camellia Society,
the American Association of
Botanical Gardens and Arboreta,
the Administrative Management
Society and the American
Rhododendron Society.
Currently, Mr. Miller is co
authoring with Dr. Jay Cohen, a
book entitled “The American
Garden Guidebook,” the first
volume of which describes 320
gardens in the Eastern United
States. He is also a consultant for
various horticultural
organizations, including Cypress
Gardens in Florida, and Live Oak
Gardens in New Iberia, La.
Miller’s contributions to public
horticulture have been recognized
by many organizations, including
the Pennsylvania Horticultural
Society, which awarded him its
Distinguished Achievement Medal
in 1981. In 1983, Miller was
awarded the American Hor-

Miller joined the American
Horticultural Society’s board of
directors in 1982, and has served on
both the Awards and Education
Committees. He has also served as
chairman of both the River Farm
Grounds Committee and the
Membership Committee as well as
first vice president of the Society
before assuming the presidency.
The Society also has four new
directors on the board. They are;
Dr. Henry M. (Marc) Cathey, a
widely recognized horticultural
scientist and director of the U.S.
National Arboretum, U.S.

received numerous horticultural
awards and is a past president of
the Society.
Stephen F. Keating is a retired
vice chairman of the board of
directors of Honeywell. Keating
has also served as the chairman of
the board of trustees of the Mayo
Foundation, as a member of the
board of trustees of the University
of Minnesota Foundation,
president of the Minnesota Land
scape Arboretum Foundation and
as the first president of the Urban
Coalition of Minneapolis.
