A good sprayer is a critical part
of today’s chemical farming. To
prevent costly repairs and time
loss when you’re ready to use it
again next spring, prepare it
properly for winter storage now.
Cleaning, checking and
protecting spray equipment before
storage will minimize problems
and extend its useful life, says
University of Delaware extension
agricultural engineer Tom
Williams.
Cleaning should include a
thorough washing inside and out
with sudsy water. Use v 4 pound of
powdered detergent per 25 gallons
of water or enough liquid detergent
to make a sudsy solution. Circulate
the detergent through the sprayer
for 10 minutes, then empty the tank
by spraying the solution through

The straight hopper drive unit is easy to work
with and simplifies maintenance. The stan

motor drive.
Corner wheel assembly guides the
chain and feed around the turns to
make the endless flat chain conveyor
possible. The fluted idler wheel and
corner rail keep the chain running

To neutralize pesticide residues

Williams says to fill the tank at
least half full with clean water and
add 1 quart of household ammonia
for each 25 gallons of water. Cir

cprayer for 10 minutes, then pump
some through the boom and noz

in the sprayer overnight and spray
it out through the nozzles the next
morning. Flush the system with a
tank full of clean water.

or deteriorated hoses.
Finally, make up enough
solution of 50 percent permanent
antifreeze and 50 percent water to
fill the pump, booms and tank
above the agitation pipe. Circulate
the mixture through the system
and pump enough through the
nozzles'to fill the boom. Leave this
in the sprayer until next spring to
prevent freezing, rust and
corrosion.
“Some storage recom
mendations suggest filling the
pump with oil,” Williams says.
“But oil and water don’t mix, and
even a little water left in the
system could be enough to damage
the pump during freezing weather.
It’s better to use antifreeze to
protect the pump.”
Take the time to prep your
sprayer for storage, the specialist
concludes. It’s worth it.
