    NEW HOLLAND - There were
two top animals at the New
Holland Sales Stable Annual Dairy
Show and Sale, one for the show
and one for the sale.
Show judge John Morris,
Frederick, Md., picked a 3 year old
shown by Kirk Lehman, Bloom
sburg, as grand champion of the
show. The Hostetter family, Ann
ville, judged a 2-year-old Pete
daughter worthy of the top price of
the sale, $5,500.
Consigned by David and Norman
Kolb, Lancaster, the sale topper
freshened at the beginning of
September and produced 87 pounds
of 3.7 milk at the end of September.
Her dam, a VG-86 Astronaut
daughter, produced three records
over 20,000 pounds of milk, peaking
at 27,180 pounds.
The second dam scored EX-91
and the next three dams scored
Very Good.

Pete Daughter Tops New
Close behind in the bidding, and
near the top in speculation for the
highest bid by sale spectators, was
a just fresh 2 year old. Consigned
by Stonehurst Farms, Strasburg,
the Warden daughter was pur
chased by Sandy Thomas, Willow
Street.
Her dam classified VG-85 and
produced four records over 22,000
milk. The next dam scored VG-87
and posted a best effort of 27,014
milk and 989 fat in 365 days.
The grand champion of the sale
sold for $4,450, the fourth high
price of the sale. Consigned by
David Kolb and Kirk and Melvin
Lehman, Bloomsburg, she was
purchased by Bob Morrell,
Cochranton, and Ron Roskopf,
Germantown, Wis. Lehmans
originally bought the champion
from Morrell at the 1985 edition of
this sale.

Classified VG-86, she also claimed
best fresh udder honors and
measures 61 inches at the withers.
A Triple Threat daughter
claimed the reserve champion
honors of the show after placing
first in the mixed breeds dry class.
However, the 60 inch tall, 3-year
old cow re-entered the sale ring
and sold fresh. Consigned by
Dennis Kolb, Lancaster, the
reserve champion freshened with a
C Romandale Jasper-Red calf
within a half-hour of the time she
was sold. The John Peila family of
Manchester, Conn., purchased the
cow for $3,650.
Her calf sold for $475 to Don
Welk, Strasburg.
Abe Diffenbach, Alvin Horning
and Lloyd Kreider auctioneered
the sale.
