    Adams County Recognizes Leaders

HEIDLERSBURG - The
Adams County 4-H Leaders
Banquet was held Tuesday
evening, Oct. 7th, at the
Heidlersburg Fireball. The
program, entitled “Adults Helping
Youth Grow,” recognized the 226
adult leaders of the Adams County
4-H program who volunteer their
time and talents annually to the 600
Adams County 4-H youth.

Highlighting the recognition
program was the presentation of
the Partners in 4-H Recognition
Award. The presentation was
made on behalf of the Adams
County 4-H Board by County 4-H
Agent Jared Tyson. The award is
presented annually to the in
dividual, organization, or company
that has contributed to the growth
and integrity of the 4-H program in
Adams County.
This year’s recipient was Helen

Tunison, Fairfield, recently
retired Adams County home
economist. Mrs. Tunison still is
active in the 4-H program having
just completed her first year as a
volunteer leader.
In his presentation Tyson noted,
“She has always had 4-H on the
front burner. She has given untold
hours and hours to the Adams
County 4-H program.”
4-H members receiving
recognition included the 1986 Teen
Leaders and the Adams County
State Award winners to the
National Club Congress. The 1986
Teen Leaders receiving certificate
of merit were; Unit 1- Michelle
Descheemaker, Steve Ludwig,
Stacey Stup, and Melanie Kuntz;
Unit II- Karl Tyson; Unit 111- Janet
Ludwig, Noel King, Chris Todt,
Daniel Smith, Kathy Todt, and Tad
Kurtz.
Those recognized as State Award
Winner to the National Club
Congress in November were:
Janet Ludwig, Tad Kurtz, Karl
■Tyson, Amy Radgers, and Tom
Dunchek.
Leaders were recognized for
their years of service. Special
awards were presented to first
year leaders and those serving 5,
10, 15, and 20 years respectively.

Speaker for the evening was Dr.
Dale Reinecker, superintendent of
schools for the Red Lion School
District. Dr. Reinecker noted that
while our education system is well

handicapped. Geographically,
they may be far from available
services. In addition, the extent
and level of services in rural and
small town areas are limited.
When the disabled are young,
they may also be isolated
emotionally because of the
distances to friends’ homes, lack of
transportation alternatives and
similar factors.
The National FFA Organization
has announced a new 8.R.1.D.G.E.
(Building Rural Initiative for
Disabled through Group Effort)

as the 4-H program that can best
teach character. Using the 4-H
pledge has an outline, Dr.
Eeinecker challenged the leaders
to apply those goals to their own
lives and to pass those values on
their club members.
The results of the election of four
new directors to the 1987 4-H Board
were: Mary Lou Reaver, Elaine
Gilbert, Leonard Lobaugh, and
Jenni Lobaugh.
Scholarship program to help ad
dress the needs of America’s rural
disabled. Funded through the
National FFA Foundation, the
program will award a $l,OOO
scholarship to an eligible FFA
member who is physically han-
dicapped, a senior in high school
and planning to study at a four
year university. It will also en
courage FFA chapter action on
behalf of the disabled by offering
an annual award to the FFA
chapter with the most innovative
and effective outreach program
for the rural disabled.
The 8.R.1.D.G.E. Scholarship
Committee will select the
recipients of the awards. The
committee includes: Honorable
