What the drought has done to the state’s apple crop is to concentrate sugars in the apples which makes for a better flavor. On the negative side, the proportion of smaller sized fruit is higher than normal. Maryland apples, from this year’s 80 million pound crop, are planning,” Duncan said. “By using dairy products, residents of our state are enhancing the flavor and nutritional value of their meals.” The 21-member board of dairy farmers sets the policy and oversees a $2 million annual ad vertising promotion and research budget. All of the members con tribute to the state program. What saved the crop this year from the ravages of the drought was a combination of mild weather with cool nights during mid and late August when the majority of apples were finishing on the trees. Also helping is the fact that most of the producing trees in Maryland’s western fruit belt are established, deep-rooted trees. Thus, they were able to obtain the water they needed via deep set roots.
