HARRISBURG - Although
Doug Goodwin came north of the
Mason-Dixon line to compete in
Saturday’s junior steer show at the
Keystone International, he found
the stiffest competition coming
from his brother rather than the
host state.
By show’s end, Doug, 15, and his
brother, Sean, 10, of Lewisburg,
West Virginia, had taken grand
and reserve honors with two of
their heavyweight entries. The
young cattlemen are the sons of
Bill and Janet Goodwin.
Doug’s winning steer was a 1,210-
pound entry that he bought in Ohio.
A class winner in the West Virginia
State Fair, the steer was sired by
the Chianina bull, Black Power
Play, out of a Limousin-Angus
cow.
Sean showed another Black
Power Play son, weighing 25
pounds more than the champion, to
the reserve spot. Although this was
Sean’s second year of 4-H com
petition, he actually began
showing at age 7 in the open shows.
“He won his class the first time
out,” recalls his father. The early
experience was evidently a good
investment, since the following
year he exhibited the champion
Angus heifer at the West Virginia
State Fair.
