10 Fall Garden Tips
Don’t put off until spring what
you can do in the fall. Jeff Jabco,
from the Delaware County
Cooperative Extension Service,
advises that fall is an ideal time for
most garden activities. Here is a
list of 10 fall garden activities to
complete.
• Plant trees, shrubs, lawns,
bulbs and herbaceous perennials.
Fall is the best time for them to
develop what they need to survive
roots.
• If it has not been done recently,
have the soil in your garden, lawn
and landscape beds tested.
• Apply the amounts of lime and
fertilizer recommended, based on
test results.
• If needed, apply broadleaved
weed killers to your lawn.
• Water shallow rooted plants,
especially broadleaved
evergreens, following dry spells of
10 days or more.
• Apply mulches where needed
around roses, landscape beds,
strawberries and other herbaceous
perennials.
• Start a compost pile.
• Prepare the garden for spring
incorporate lime, phosphorus,
and compost organic matter.
•If rabbits or rodents have
damaged plants in the past,
provide protection for susceptible
varieties.
• Take advantage of the
beautiful weather to build or
renovate a fence, walk, or patio.
