Delaware 4-Her Wins Bob Brans Quarter Horse
NEWARK, Del. - Jamal
Wiggins, a Delaware 4-H’er for
nine years, is this year’s winner of
a Bob Evans quarter horse
weanling. The 9-month-old colt,
Bekays High Gusto, is a sorrel with
a flaxen mane and tail. The
weanling had already taken first
place in a halter class before
Jamal acquired him.
Each year the famous sausage
maker and restaurateur Bob
Evans holds a Western-style
roundup, complete with campfires
and trail rides, on his 1,100-acre
farm in Ohio. To this event he
invites one lucky 4-H teenager
from each of the 12 states where
his products are sold. These teens,
who are chosen on the basis of
citizenship and involvement in 4-H,
the youth education branch of
Cooperative Extension, return
home with their own quarter horse

weanlings.
Gus, as Jamal calls the horse,
was the teenager’s first choice.
“When I saw the weanlings at Bob
Evans’ farm, I knew I wanted the
one with the flaxen mane and tail,”
says the youth. “Gus was the
second horse down the chute, and I
had picked number two. So he was
mine.”
Jamal has had a pony since he
was 5 years old. But he has now
outgrown it. The quarter horse is a
larger animal that will enable the
teenager to compete in area horse
shows.
“I plan to train Gus as a Western
pleasure horse and use him for
breeding,” says Jamal. “But until
South Mountain 4-H Community Club

4-H Community Club met recently year-end roundup.
Following a potluck supper,
county agent Martha Gregory
commended members for their
outstanding projects and thanked
leaders for their help and support.
Sue Werner thanked parents for
attending the roundup and for their
support throughout the year.
Winners for the barbeque ticket
sale were Eddie Royer, first;
Kraig Sellers, second; and Angela
Hoover, third. They each received
gift certificates from Jim Dandy’s
Pizza.

he’s old enough to ride, I’ll show
him in halter classes at 4-H
shows.”
In addition to being a junior
counselor at 4-H day camp in
Newark, where he assisted in
computer and photography
classes, Jamal has worked on a
breeder chick program, a pumpkin
project and other agricultural
programs. He has also served as
an editor for the Barnes Owl, the
Delaware 4-H State Camp
newspaper. Jamal is also active in
Boy Scouts and was elected vice
president of his class at Caravel
Academy last year. The 10th
grader is also a budding sculptor
and musician.
A bowling party is scheduled for
Oct. 31 at the Palmyra Bowling
Alley. A Harvest Party, or
progressive meal, will be held
Saturday, Dec. 6.
