Totem Pole Quilf She# Boasts 100 Entries BY BARBARA MILLER Lycoming Co. Correspondent ATHENS - One hundred old and new quilts were on display at the Totem Pole Quilt Show and Sale at the Ingersoll Rand Clubhouse, Athens, Oct. 4 through 5. Ap proximately 1,500 people were expected to attend the event, which also included displays of antique properties, dolls and Indian ceramics. Quilts of every variety, size, and age were on display. The exhibit included a black quilt, a map quilt, a quilt of yo-yos and one comprised of white sugar bags. Winner of the 1986 Viewers Choice Award was “Liberty Legacy” (1986) made by Cindy Applegate and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Gene Wilbur of the Strawberry Patch Calico Shop, Columbia Cross Roads. According to Jeanne Wilbur, the blue toned quilt was made by Ms. Applegate as an entry to the national Great American Quilt Festival Contest held in New York City. The theme of the contest was the Statue of Liberty and the quilt was an original design. Each of the multiple borders of the quilt symbolized the statue and the pedestal as one peers down on it from above. Included in the quilt are hand designed patches sym bolic of the many countries from which came immigrants to the United States. Russian mosques appear on the Russian patch and the Canadian patch features a maple leaf. A multi-colored star is the central patch symbolizing the “lady” herself. “Victorian House” won the 1986 Viewers Choice Award in the small items category. One of the oldest quilts displayed, it is owned by Mrs. Robert Mullen of South Waverly. This "Victorian House" wall hanging in a hoop, worked in blue and white tones, was made by Patricia McLinko to illustrate her son’s house. The piece won the 1986 Viewer’s Award for small items. McLinko, Hackettstown, N.J., and constructed by his mother, Patricia McLinko, the quilted wallhanging, encircled by a hoop, depicted Mr. McLinko’s Victorian house in blue and gray tones. The “Postage Stamp” quilt (1831) was one of the oldest on display. Owned by Mrs. Robert Mullen, South Waverly, and made by Sara Wiles Wade Herkimer of the Herkimer Diamond Mine family of Herkimer, N. Y., the quilt was filled with raw cotton. Ap proximately 5,100 brown and white toned one-inch square patches (about the size of a postage stamp) made up the handsewn quilt. “That one’s different! It’s almost like stained glass looks antiquish, like little cameos,” exclaimed a lady viewing “Vic tonana,” winner of the 1985 Totem »•** * » 1 » ♦ Pole Quilt Show Viewer’s Choice Award. This quilt was made and owned by Catherine Heib, Painted Post, N.Y., using a Joyce Scholtzhauer design. Made of soft earthtones, the quilt’s graceful curving patches met at intervals where there was a small oval patch reminiscent of a flowered cameo broach. “Northwest Territory” (1986), a unique entry, fashioned by a class of fourth graders from Marietta, Ohio, took the form of a map. It depicted an Indian trail going from Shesequm to Marietta. The quilt includes Indian symbols on pat ches bordering the quilt with the center bottom patch listing the names of Mrs. Smith’s fourth grade class. The only black quilt in the show was a crazy quilt made in 1917 by owner Robin Pierce’s great grandmother. This was a very dramatic quilt made of black velveteen and embroidered with shiny, brightly colored floss. The black satin ruffle which showed the quilt off most effectively was probably added at a later date. The quilt featured several bugs and a spider done in embroidery and raised applique which made them look quite realistic. Black velvet black satin, spiders and bugs an entry surely Vincent Price would adore. The fourth Totem Pole Quilt Show and Sale was sponsored by the Mather Memorial Library, Ulster. Coordinator was Virginia Pruyne with helpers Jennie Berg and Jane Bresee. Contributors were Willard Ixmg specializing in Indian ceramics, Strawberry Patch Calico Shop, My Hands To Thee, Burnt Hill Books, Stitching Post, and local dollmakers.
