MOODY, CONTRACTOR 113 Walnut Lane West Newton, PA 15089 PH 412-872-6804 :r ion A black Simmental bull shown by Virts took reserve honors. His owner noted that “Ike” got his unusual color from being one eighth Angus. “They’re (black Simmentals) are just starting to get some popularity,” said Virts, noting that the Angus influence tends to produce beef cattle of moderate size more attractive to the packing industry. Ike is a Buck son out of a CPS dam. The champion Simmental bull was shown by Bill Shoemaker of Shoemaker Simmentals, co owners of SWHS Learjet with Whitney Hills. Learjet was also last year’s KILE champion. “I was a little concerned whether he had enough flesh on him,” said Shoemaker, noting that the bull has been involved in an ambitious breeding program recently. Bred by Shoemaker, Learjet is a Lightning son out of Dream Girl, the intermediate champion at Louisville two years ago. SWHS Miss Cher, another Shoemaker/Whitney Hills entry, took reserve honors in the heifer show. A natural calf sired by CPS, Cher won her class at Maryland’s Eastern National Livestock Show last week. Just as she’d done in the junior breeding cattle show, Leigh Hitz went to the top of the open Chianina heifer show with her Kentucky Colonel-sired heifer named Bambi. Leigh is the daughter of Lee and Elene Hitz of Annville. Another repeat winner was Mike Messick’s heifer that took reserve honors in both the junior and open shows. Also sired by Kentucky Colonel, Messick’s entry was reserve champion at the Northeast Region Chianina Field Day in York. The show's top Chianina bull was MS White Lightning, owned by Larry and Donna Moore of Moving M Farm, Gatesburg, Pa.
