Accqrding to Daisy, since they opened their market 11 years ago, the number of places selling produce nearby has increased as much as 100 percent. “Beware, it’s not peaches and cream,” Daisy cautioned. “It’s not as easy as it looks," Cathy remarked, “If you don’t want to give 250 percent, don’t do it.” A current trend in the produce business, the women noted, is that people now want everything picked. “They will pay $l5 for picked beans when the price to pick your own is $5 per bushel,” Daisy remarked, adding that it was the same for strawberries. Cathy attributed the trend to more working women. They also see more people from both ends of the economic spec trum. More of their customers are paying with food stamps and more are driving Cadillacs to purchase fresh produce, the women said. A phenomenon Cathy found peculiar was that, “People buy flowers before food. They’ll complain about paying 90 cents a dozen for eggs and then they buy flowers.” All agreed that few customers know a quart from a gallon or a gallon from a bushel. “You’d just be amazed at how much of that there is,” exclaimed Edna. In the off-season from late fall to early spring, the women say they find tune to pursue hobbies and interests. Daisy recently hosted an IFYE student from Japan and helps with a local 4-H club. Cathy is a leader of the Covered Bridge 4-H Club, a member of the Development Council for 4-H in Northumberland County, and a representative to the 4-H Regional Redevelopment Committee. She and Sam attend various vegetable grower and marketing conferences during the winter. Winter is a time, Edna says, when she sews and when she catches up on her mending. None of the Styer women set out to marry a farmer, but if Ralph and Edna’s long-lived marriage is any indication, a side benefit of produce farming could be marital bliss. Fashion Show (Continued from Page B 14) Another hit with the audience was a christening dress modeled by a sleeping Lauren Elizabeth Hecht. On her own for just a year and half, Denise said she was delighted with the response to the fashion show. “I was really pleased with it and 1 learned a few things to remember for the next time. The setting was so pretty and I thank Marian and Kathy for that.” Denise enjoys the challenge of creating a new garment for each client and the pleasure that her clients get from owning a custom designed garment.
