814-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 13,1986 Fashion Show footnotes Unique Clothing BY SALLY BAIR Lancaster Co. Correspondent MOUNT JOY - Marian and Elvm Brenneman’s dairy farm near Mount Joy provided an unusual setting for an unusual tea and fashion show. The show featured one-of-a-kind fashions created by Denise David- Baer and the luncheon showcased a variety of foods prepared by Maggie Keeler of I-cola and Lynda Brosey of Bainbridge. Seventy-five people tasted the delicious food while seated at small tables in the front yard near the farm house, with Marian’s Lavender Patch gift shop in the background. Food ranged from cucumber and watercress sand wiches to anise bread with lemon thyme butter. Desserts featured lavender patch cheesecake, plum basil thumbprint cookies and tennel shortbread. Models passed some of the food as they strolled among the tables, offering peach cookie and lemon lime petit fours. It was the unique fashions which created the interest, however. All the fashions were created for one person, and none will be duplicated. In contrast to most fashion shows, it was announced before the show that the clothing was not for sale. Ranging from "country casual to sophisticated formal," the gar ments showcased the skills of designer David-Baer. Each was designed with much input by the clients, including consideration of coloring, personality, the occasion to be worn and the fabric desired. Ranging from a casual bare midnff skirt and top to wedding dresses, the clothing featured fine attention to detail as well as an enduring kind of style. Many of the outfits featured accents of antique lace, a touch favored by this designer. She travels to antique shops and shows as far away as New England to find the laces she likes to use. Denise said she prefers to use fine quality fabrics in her creations and travels to the garment district of New York City, to Philadelphia and to G Street in Rockville, Md. for the perfect fabric. Denise is moving to rural Lancaster County from her country home near Wrightsville in York County. She will be living with her husband, Gary, on Second Lock Road near New Danville. The old home they are restoring there will have space for a shop and work area. When asked how the idea for the fashion show came about, Marian said, “Denise was designing for myself and my friends and I believe in backing my friends.” The two had met earlier at a craft show, and David-Baer designed a wedding dress for Marian’s daughter LuAnn, as well as dresses for Marian and her mother. The three generation dresses were modeled in the ‘’how. * &*« .2 Tea and fashions were featured Sunday at the farm of Marian and Elvin Brenneman, near Mount Joy. Guests were treated to lunch at tables topped by striped umbrellas on the lawn, as models showed the fashions created by Denise David-Baer. Although Denise said she will custom design any kind of clothing from casual to career, she clearly enjoys the challenge of creating special occasion dresses. A highlight of the show was a first communion dress for 8-year-old Courtney Axe of Lancaster. Commentator Ann Miller related Denise David-Baer, right, thanks the models as they take a final bow after the fashion show. Each of the garments is one of-a-kind, designed in consultation with a client. The luncheon table was filled with goodies prepar . with herbal accents. Guests could choose from tea sandwiches, fresh fruit compote and a wide variety of quick breads as well as delicious, intricately fashioned desserts. ■W *Jf that Courtney had had very specific ideas about her dress, and Denise admitted that this youngster was more definite than many older people. However, her specific requests enabled Denise to create a beautiful dress, perfect for the child and the occasion.
