A2O-Uncaster Farming, Saturday, September 13,1986 BY BETH NESBIT SOMERSET - On Saturday, Aug. 30 the best 4-H dairy members from eight southwestern Penn sylvania counties congregated at the Somerset County Fairgrounds for the 40th annual Southwest District 4-H Dairy Show. Each 4-H animal represents the best from their respective counties; the district competition is to choose the best from the best to represent southwestern Pennsylvania at the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show to be held Sept. 22, at the Farm Show complex in Harrisburg. Judges for this day-long event were type judge, Ron Long, Select Sires; fitting judge, Richard Plotts, Clinton County Extension agent; and the showmanship judge, Lisa Cooper, Butler County extension program assistant. A total of 229 animals were exhibited by 150 4-H members. The eight counties participating in the show were: Armstrong, Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Clearfield, Huntington, Indiana, and Somerset. The day began with the exhibition of the Milking Short horn; Monica Goshom, Hun tingdon County, was the owner of the grand champion and the reserve grand champion Milking Shorthorn. In the Holstein competition the host county’s 4-H members dominated the grand and reserve grand championships with Karen Marteeny exhibiting the grand champion and Paul Carr leading the reserve grand champion. A Bedford County resident received the grand champion title in the Guernsey competition. Beth Ann Clark exhibited her 4-year-old cow to claim this title. Gina Yaple of Clearfield was the owner of the reserve grand champion Guern sey. Every year a special award is given to the outstanding Guernsey showmap at the conclusion of the Guernsey show. This award is presented by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith, Bedford County, in memory of their daughter Lori Anne. Lori Anne was an active member in the 4-H organization. The recipient of the award this year was Lori Winsheimer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burton Weinsheimer, Indiana County. In the Ayrshire competition Julie Hall, Huntingdon County, captured the grand champion title while Michele Burket of Blair County received the reserve champion ribbon. Cindy Deabenderfer, a second year 4-H dairy member from In diana County, was at the halter of the grand champion Brown Swiss female. Huntingdon County resident, Diane Goshorn, received the reserve champion title. Standing in the champion Jersey position was Janice Hardy of Huntingdon County. Sam McGargle also of Huntingdon County captured the reserve champion honors.
