Consider Child’s Needs
To Control Behavior
MEDIA - How well do
parents and child
rearers assess a child’s
behavior before they
lump it all in one
category called
naughtiness? Quite
frequently young
children are whiney,
uncooperative, or may
have temper tantrums
when they are over
tired, hungry or are in
the early stages of an
oncoming illness.
It is certainly not fair
to a young child to be
taken on a shopping trip
at nap time. It is also
inconsiderate not to
offer a child (while
away from home) food
and drink as needed, or
an opportunity to use
toilet facilities suf
ficiently early to help
them maintain a degree
of comfort.
According to
Maryetta Dorricott,
Delaware County
Cooperative Extension
home economist,
children have feelings
and generally will try to
do what is expected of
them. They do have
limitations of en
durance, however!
Whan adults push them
beyond the brink of
what young bodies and
wills can take,
rebellious behavior
occurs. This is not the
time to punish them!
This is the time to think
of whether or not we are
being sensible, honest,
loving parents with the
ability to put the needs
of young children ahead
of our own when certain
situations arise.
