DILLSBURG 4-H members
from six south central Penn
sylvania counties competed for top
places at the District Performance
Horse Show held at Heritage
Acres, Dillsburg, Aug.l6.
Counties represented in the >
competition were Adams, Cum
berland, Dauphin, Franklin,
Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and
York.
Below are the top three places in
each class of competition.

most people don’t recognize it.”

dream of happiness and every
tomorrow a vision of hope.”
In addition to the fresh produce
some local handwork is offered,
mostly baskets. This year for the
first time a neighbor is making
baked goods for sale there.
Edith’s work is centered around
the market, but not exclusively.
She has been working as chairman
for the Palmyra Fresh Air
program, and opened her own
home to these children from New
York City for 10 years. In addition,
her own family has hosted ex
change students from Finland,
Sweden and Peru through the
lion’s Club Youth Exchange. But
whether foreign visitors or city
visitors, they have had much the
same reaction to living on Leh
man’s farm “We didn’t realize
you worked so hard.”
Saying they really are in the
“people” business, Edith says
those exchanges were a good
experience for all involved. She’s
glad to show others that
Americans are hard-working
people.
A member of Farm Women
Society #3, she enjoys that
fellowship with other rural women.
She and her husband are active
members of Lebanon Valley Bible

By late September and October,
the main market items will be
apples, pumpkins and potatoes.
Halloween will mark the closing of
the market.
In the winter, when the blinds
are pulled and the market closed,
Edith likes to “fix up dolls.” She
says, “I have a lot from the 20’s to
the 60’s. I worked on a few of my
own and picked up a few. I have
my daughters’ and daughters-in
laws’ and when my grand
daughters are finished playing
with them, I fix them. It is my
hobby.”
While she enjoys working with
the customers, Edith comments,
“I love to go and pick things in the
evening. It makes you feel thankful
and you know that God is still in
control.”
As she moves through the
market, the delight she feels in her
work comes through. She tells one
customer, “Peaches are like corn,
every one has a little different
flavor, but they are all good.” She
thanks another for bringing his
own bag, and chats with another
about neighborhood news. In
between she fills up baskets as
they empty, brings in more com,
and directs her two grand
daughters who came to help her
this week while her regular em
ployee takes vacation.
Twelve-year-old Amy Lehman
seems to echo her grandmother’s
feelings as she says, “I love it. It’s
not like work; it’s more like fun.”
