Penn State-Temple football game
a new look Sept. 6.
The Pennsylvania Dairy
Promotion Program will present a
2-foot bronze replica of the milk
can to the winning team, as an
nounced this spring. But there is
more to it than that, it was
revealed at the August meeting of
the Dairy Advisory Board.
The outstanding player at each
game will be given a miniature

Duncan of Robesonia noted that
Coach Joe Paterno was
“especially delighted” with the
scholarship.
Board members also were asked
by Cathy Lockerman of the TCS
sports network to come up with a
name for the intrastate rivalry
that could be used on the broad
casts. Not bowl, it was pointed out,
as Penn State doesn’t participate
in bowls during the regular season.
After much discussion, board
members picked “Pennsylvania
Dairy Gridiron Classic.”
“We’re promoting milk as a fun,
trendy beverage and we expect to
reach 900,000 adults each game
during the season,” Duncan added.
“That’s a huge untapped market
for milk.”
For the Dairy Classic, the board
will buy 17 advertising spots
during pre-game and live game
broadcasts, plus several an
nouncements of the trophy and
scholarship awards.
Similar trophies and a
scholarship will be awarded at the
Penn State-Pitt game on Nov. 22.
In other business covered by the
board during their meeting held at
Ag Progress Days, a Christmas
Holiday advertising campaign
featuring eggnog was approved.
At the beginning of 1987 the board
plans to use a campaign focusing
on 2 percent milk.
The dairy recipe contest spon
sored by the board received an
overwhelming response. Category
winners will be named at the an
nual meeting of the board,
scheduled for Oct. 16. The menu for
the meeting will consist entirely of
the winning recipes.
Dr. Robert McCarthy, professor
of food science at Penn State,
reported on the progress of his
research regarding milk’s in
fluence on cholesterol levels.
PDPP, which financed the
research, heard the preliminary
research data which looks
favorable for the dairy industry.
Dr. Sidney Barnard, professor of
food science at Penn State,
reported on the progress of his
studies involving milk quality and
flavor. As part of his study, he is
working closely with producers to
solve their rancidity problems.
PDPP financially supports this
study as milk flavor directly in
fluences milk consumption.
More than 4,000 dairymen
contribute 10 cents a hun
dredweight to the Pennsylvania
program, with $2 million budgeted
in 1986 for milk advertising,
promotion, research and market
development.
