Ov er 1,300 4-H'ers Attend Achievement Days STATE COLLEGE - Veteran and novice 4-H’ers gathered at Penn State to compete in 22 con tests at the annual State Achievement Day held earlier this week. Traditional and nontraditional 4- H competitions, designed to en courage youths to greater achievements, were staged with emphasis appropriately on achievement. Over 1,300 4-H members qualified for competition on the state level after completing successful campaigns on the county or regional levels. In remarks made to the 4-H assembly, Dr. Lamartine Hood, Penn State’s dean of agriculture, offered congratulations on the recognition and achievement the 4- H’ers attained to this point. Hood encouraged them to make the most of the week and said, “I challenge you to reach out, make new friends and make the most of your 4-H experience." After receiving an enthusiastic welcome from the Bucks County delegation, he recalled that he first became interested in Penn State as a Bucks County 4-H member. Hood noted that the assembly was a “chosen people” for having par ticipated in 4-H projects and again urged them to test their limits. Participation in the Achievement Days is up from previous years which is indicative of the support that the programs receive on a county level and the strength of the entire program, said Dr. Alan Snider, Penn State’s assistant director for 4-H youth programs. For three days the delegates enjoyed the Penn State campus by participating in socials and competitions. One of the more elaborate contests, the Fashion Revue, kept participants busy with meetings and practices for the entire three days. Selected from eight regions, the Fashion Revue participants presented a fashion show to their fellow 4-H’ers and judges. At the end of the evening, 10 individuals were selected for the honors group. They will be eligible to submit the National 4-H Report for judging at the state level.
