Groff Repeats Win In BY JACK RUBLEY LANCASTER - After Wed nesday’s performance at the Lancaster County FFA Market Hog Show, Lampeter’s Andy Graft would do well to hire out as the county’s FFA swine consultant. After topping the hog show last year in his first year of FFA competition, Groff repeated the performance this week. The son of John and Sue Groff campaigned his 240-pound gilt to the heavyweight championship before taking the grand champion title. Thus far his winning formula appears to be a York-Duroc cross bred on the home farm. “It’s a 205 lb 1 Jeff Wagner 2 DaveCassel 3 Tobin Shank 2101 b 1 Andy Groff 2 Jere Hoover 3 Jeff Byers 2151 b Andy Groff sold his Lancaster Co. Both this year’s and the 1985 champion may well have been out of the same boar, he says. In choosing show pigs, like the 15 he’ll be showing this year, Groff selects long pigs with “good muscling” and width across the back. Judge Henry Gruber went with another Duroc cross for his reserve champion. The 240-pound gilt followed Groff’s pig to the number-two slot after being named reserve heavyweight champion. A second “average” pig shown by Heisey was named champion of the mediumweight “That was a surprise, too,” he said. The son of J. Warren and Beverly Heisey of Elizabethtown, Steve bought his pig from Bain bridge swine breeder Larry Mullen. An FFA member for four years, this was Heisey’s first reserve championship win in the county show. In the sale that followed the morning show, Hatfield Packing topped the bidding for Groff’s grand champion, offering a final bid of $4. Hatfield was also the sale’s most active buyer, going home with 38 FFA hogs. Other volume buyers included Leidy Packing, Souderton, with 13 hogs; White Oak Mills, Elizabethtown, with 12 and Walter M. Dunlap and Sons, Lancaster, with 10. The sale averaged 70 cents a pound, not including champions, and the 19,225 pounds of pork sold went for $14,504.
