    4-H'ers Learn Showmanship Tips At Reid Day

nervous and so were their han
dlers. “This is the first time we’ve
had rain for the event,” said
county 4-H advisor Joann Logan of
the July 19th field day. Then she
explained that the storm ac
counted for only part of the ner
vousness.
Last year there was no field day
in the county before the fair. The
day of fair judging, a steer that
was being unloaded broke loose
and injured a spectator. “We
thought we’d better give the kids
more experience in handling the
animals before they got in front of
a crowd this year,” Logan said.
With the help of judge Robert
Logan, a 4-H graduate, the young
steer handlers got a thorough and
supportive critique. Praise for the
winners with strong emphasis on
how much they’d worked with their
animals, accompanied by pointers
to the others on how to handle their
steers better made the lessons
easy to take.
Despite the rain and the chores
waiting at home, the youngsters
stayed. There was little of the

The showmanship competition
was held in sheep, hogs, and goats
as well as beef, and a special
competition was held for con
formation judging, including an
adult division. Other judges for the
event were Dorothy Harr, sheep;
Paul Winklosky, hogs; and Marcy
Jones, goats.
