HUGHESVILLE - Despite the
wet weather that brought rain on
all but two days of the Lycoming
County Fair, attendance increased
some 2,000 this year at the
fairgrounds in HughesviUe. Held
July 10 to 19, the fair also boasted
an increase in the number of
livestock entries, with the sheep
shows registering a 40-percent
increase over last year.
The Lycoming County Dairy
Show was held July 16 under rainy
skies.
Franlo-Alken Farms, Bellefonte,
claimed the top honor in the
Holstein division. The Franlo-
Alken entry, grand champion
Franlo-Alken Drucie GPB4, is a
three-year-old homebred SWD
Valiant daughter. According to
herdsmen, Kevin Kellerman, she
is working on a milking record of
24,000 M with 3.7 test. With a cow
index of plus 898, she is one of their
best indexed cows. Her grandam is
a Delight cow with a rating of
EX9I. Drucie took best udder of
the show. Franlo-Alken Farms
walked away with 14 blue ribbons,
more than any other entrant in the
Holstein Show.
Reserve grand champion
Holstein went to a cow owned by
Burton Stamen, Jr. of Valley
Farms, Montgomery. Stamen said
his entry, Burmar Creek Bright
VGBB, a three-year-old, is
projected at more than 18,DOOM
with 600 F. Her granddam earned a
rating of 91EX and her sister
turned EX9O at four years old. She
is a homebred cow.
Reserve grand champion and
grand champion Jersey honors
went to Mildred Seeds of
Downington, who has been raising
Jerseys for more than 30 years.
Her cow, grand champion Top-O-
Hill Milestone Tempest, is a full
sister to the cow that won Grand
Champion Jersey at the Farm
Show last January. Tempest, a
seven-year-old, has won the grand
champion prize at numerous fairs.
Seeds went home with 14 blue
ribbons.
Judge, John Sullivan, Genesco,
New York, obviously impressed
with the quality of the Jerseys
shown, remarked, “The Jerseys in
this show were probably the finest
set of cattle I’ve had the pleasure

In the Ayrshire division William
and Carl Sandel of Danville won
the grand champion and reserve
gramd champion prizes for their
entries. The Sandels, who have
shown Ayrshires for a number of
years, took the grand champion
prize with their 13-year-old Ayr
shire, Delores Flashy Bird. She
also won first prize in the aged cow
division. Frosty-Ayr Molly, a five
year-old, won the reserve grand
champion.
The Grand Champion Guernsey
trophy went to Rhonda Peterman,
Muncy. Peterman also won grand
champion Jersey in the 4-H Dairy
Show. She showed a three-year-old
named Blossom purchased from
Albert Hack, Berwick.
Reserve champion guernsey was
shown by owner, Stephanie
Stackhouse, of Stillwater. Her
nine-year-old cow, Aidde, was
purchased from Albert Hack,
Berwick.
Winner of the grand champion
prize in the Brown Swiss show was
Crystal Ulmer, Linden; reserve
grand champion was owned by
Lynette Ulmer, Linden.
For the eighth consecutive year
the premier breeder and exhibitor
banners were awarded to Ritter-
Ridge Farms, Muncy, owned by
Hilda Ritter and sons, Paul and
Wayne
4-H Dairy Show
A sister and brother duo won top
places in the Holstein division of
the 4-H Dairy Show.
Cynthia Showers, 12, won the
grand champion Holstein trophy
by showing her two-year-old, Try-
Oaks Astro-Jewel April. Cynthia
and Wayne, 14, live with their
grandparents, George and Ann
Showers, Allenwood. 'Both are
members of the Bald Eagle 4-H
dub. Cynthia has been showing
dairy cattle for four years and last
year showed reserve grand
champion. How did it feel to win
grand champion this year? “Kind
of good,” Cynthia replied. She
believes since she has worked with
the same animal for the past three
years, it helped her to win this
year.
Wayne Showers won reserve
grand champion Holstein with his
entry, Try-Oaks Astro-Jewel
Hilda. Wayne has won reserve
grand champion before.
Owner of the grand champion
Guernsey cow, Rhonda Peterman
has belonged to the LairdsviUe Ag
4-H Club for four years. She has
shown her Guernsey, Blossom,
during that time. Although her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kendall
Peterman, Muncy, milk a herd of
Holsteins mixed with a few colored
breeds, Rhonda chose to show a
Guernsey. Why didn’t she choose a
Holstein? “Because I don’t like
Holsteins,” she quipped.
In the Ayrshire breed, Todd
Russell, Linden, won the grand
champion prize with his three
year-old, Penn Spring M B Gloria.
Todd is a member of State Road 4-
H Club. Reserve grand champion
Ayrshire trophy went to Stacey
Wagner also of State Road 4-H
Club.
The grand champion award in
the Jersey breed was presented to
Shannon Peterman, Muncy, for
her two-year-old entry, Deer’s
Ginger. Shannon is a member of
the Lairdsville 4-H Ag Club.
The reserve grand champion
Jersey award went to Jennifer
Schultz, Muncy, a member of the
118 Ag Club. Heavens Blessings
Chocolate Debbie was the name of
her intermediate calf.
Crystal Ulmer of Linden showed
the grand champion Brown Swiss,
and Lynette Ulmer, also of Linden,
showed the reserve grand
champion Brown Swiss. Both are
members of the State Road 4-H
Club.
Winners of the Club Herd class
were: Bald Eagle, first; State Run,
second; and 118 Ag Club, third.
Neal Bowen, Wellsboro, was
type judge for the event; Dick
Yule, Millville, showing judge; and
Dave Norman, Liberty, fitting
judge.
