Carroll County, Maryland, needs its agriculture just like every other county in Lan
caster Farming Territory. To celebrate the annual Farm Show last Sunday at the farm
museum in Westminster, a spread of farm products was assembled in front of the sign.
Lancaster Farming's Maryland staff correspondent Sharon Schuster who won a fun trip
to the fair took the photo.
The Farm Bureau had an attractive display of crops native to Carroll County and
featured strawberries, corn, peaches, wheat and wine as well as others.
A model farm taken to area Carroll County schools was on display at the annual fair.
The farm is used for demonstrations to school students. In the background is the Carroll
County agricultural preservation information booth.

Del. Extension Offers
Broiler Computer Programs
NEWARK, Del. - Ap
proximately 200 new broiler houses
were constructed on Delmarva in
1985. Most growout companies are
anxious to see an equal or greater
number constructed this year. The
future looks good indeed for the
chicken meat industry.
“When viewed from a broad
perspective, new broiler housing is
definitely a good decision for
Delmarva,” says University of
Delaware extension poultry
specialist Dan Palmer. However,
he cautions individual growers to
examine their own special set of
circumstances before deciding to
build. First-time growers have
even more homework to do than
existing producers who wish to
expand. It can sometimes be hard
to assemble and analyze all the
information which must be
collected before the construction
crew arrives. This is where a
computer can help.
University of Delaware ex
tension farm management
specialist Dr. Don Tilmon has
developed computer programs
designed to help people interested
in putting up new poultry housing.

with the National Association of
Conservation Districts (NACD).
The programs are for broiler,
roaster and comish production.
The Grower Committee of
Delmarva Poultry Industry, Inc.
(DPI) assisted Tilmon with the
basic input information and will
continue to update this information
each year.
This summer during the
Delaware State Fair, July 18-26,
University of Delaware extension
personnel will be on hand in a
special tent on the fairgrounds to
meet with anyone interested in
new poultry house construction.
Those interested in new poultry
house construction will have a
second opportunity to see how the
computer program works during
Agricultural Resources Day
(formerly Farm and Home Field
Day), Saturday, August 9, at the
university’s Research and
Education Center (formerly the
Substation) near Georgetown.
