Since I needed a topic for this
week and thought we all could use
a refresher on nutrition, I decided
to write a few lines on the subject.
The word “nutrition” has struck

fear in the hearts of many
livestock producers who are used
to buying their feed ready mixed at
a local feed store. Hand
calculating a ration for protein,
energy, calcium, phosphorus and
other nutrients can be a
monumental task. Once you un-

derstand the importance ot the
various nutrients and their effect
on pig performance, perhaps this
task will be easier to bear.
To optimize productivity in your
swine operation, provide your hogs
with free-choice water. Failure to
do so will only result in reduced
growth rate and feed efficiency,
decreased sow milk production
and, ultimately, reduced
profitability.
Generally speaking, pigs will
drink about one quart of water for
every pound of dry feed they eat.
Lactating sows require more
water since the bulk of their ex
creted milk is water.
What factors affect a pig’s water
needs? Environmental tem
perature and the productive stage
of the animal are the major ones.
Higher temperature, especially
during summer months, will in
crease a pig’s water requirement.
Providing unlimited fresh, clean
water is essential in keeping
consumption at maximum. Bowl
type automatic and nipple
waterers are two of the best ways
to do this. The nipple waterer has
the advantage of being cheaper
and cleaner. Provide at least one
waterer for each 20 to 25 pigs to
ensure adequate consumption.
In conclusion, water is essential
for optimum production and
profitability in a swine operation.
Don’t overlook it. Fail to provide
adequate water and your profits
will go down the drain.
Cornell Extension to Hold
For now, though, let’s keep it
simple.
Pigs need a whole host of
nutrients for normal growth and
well-being, including water,
energy, protein, minerals and
vitamins. Wild pigs are om
nivorous, that is, they eat a wide
variety of foods from both plant
and animal sources. As a matter of
fact, their digestive system and
eating habits are more like those of
humans than any other domestic
animal species.
In commercial operations today,
hogs are fed diets consisting of
cereal grains, a protein sup
plement (soybean oil meal, peanut
oil meal, fish meal, linseed oil
meal and the like), mineral and
vitamin supplements, and salt.
These ingredients are blended
together to ensure that every bite
is as nutritious as the last.
Perhaps the most important
nutrient of all is water. Because of
its availability and low cost, most
producers don’t even consider
water a nutrient. But actually, it’s
the single most essential one. Pigs
can live a lot longer without feed
than water.
