USDA Buyout Report
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The
fifth weekly report on the buyout
was released by the USDA on
Wednesday.
USDA figures show an estimated
24,900 head of cattle in the program
were slaughtered during the week
ending June 18. This figure in
cludes all cows, heifers and calves
in the DTP, according to the USDA
spokesman.
An estimated cumulative total of
422,800 head have been slaughtered
since the beginning of the DTP on
April 1.
Meat purchases by the govern
ment reached 15.9 million pounds
for the week ending June 14. This
New cowside progest
erone test kits are now
available for helping
farmers improve the
reproductive performance
of their dairy herds.
One of the most im
portant uses of cowside
progesterone tests is to
verify the heat status of
cows, particularly those
that have weak or
questionable signs of
estrus.
In the hands of an ex
perienced and
knowledgeable user the
test can also help to con
firm pregnancy. But, other
ovarian dysfunctions may
lead one to erroneously
conclude that a cow is
pregnant.
These new progesterone
test kits should be viewed
as one more useful tool
available to farmers. They
do not replace the need for
skillful observation of
animals, good
management, and the
services of a well-trained
veterinarian.
