Lancaster Mall Promotion
Milk cartons took on new shapes and went incognito in the first annual milk carton
sculpturing contest, sponsored by the Lancaster County Milk Promotion Committee.
This contest, held at the Willow Valley Mall in Lancaster, received entries from, in the
junior division: Chris Barnett, 15; Jason Barnett, 11; and Jocelyn Barnett, 8. In the adult
division, Mike Martin was the sole entrant.

of the cost of production. The
target price would be set at no less
than |4.65, with a loan rate of at
least $3.55. Under the program,
producers not participating in the
quota system would not be per
mitted to market any wheat.
Calling production controls
“repugnant to the free enterprise
system,” American Farm Bureau
Federation spokesman Dean
Brown urged producers to vote
“no” in the poll. “The only thing
that makes it (production controls)
look appealing now is that farm
incomes are low,” said Brown.
“The concept of the present
program is to make us more
competitive and thereby increase
our export market, which has
decreased steadily since 1982,”
Brown said.
“Foreign farmers are happy to
see the U.S., the world’s largest
exporter, set artificially high price
supports above their costs of
production...” AFBF stated in a
news release, explaining that price
supports here only encourage
foreign countries to produce more
commodities and sell them at
lower prices.

structure has served as a
prototype for US.
From that first informal
meeting, a core group of 16 Jersey
breeders from Pennsylvania, Ohio,
and New York and AJCC field
persons Cari Wolfe and David
Parkinson have been meeting
monthly to formulate a mem
bership agreement, sire selection
and procurement procedures,
make contact with the AI
organizations and work on its
articles of incorporation and
bylaws. The group met here
Wednesday to finalize its plans for
a membership campaign and to
hear committee reports. The
membership agreement between
US and a participating herd
provides for US to identify the
young registered Jersey sires
worthy of sampling based on a
genetic evaluation of the pedigree
information. US will arrange for a
reputable AI organization to
collect, process, store and
distribute the semen. US will
distribute five to 10 units of semen
per sampling sire to an adequate
number of randomly-selected
participating herds. Semen will be
distributed at cost to the members.
The participating member
agrees to pay a yearly mem
bership of $25. The breeder must
keep his herd on official test and is

Wheat Poll

NFO’s grain department director,
Bob Kessler, pointing out that
major wheat producing countries,
including Argentina, Australia and
Canada, can no more afford to sell
their crop at a loss than the United
States can.
According to NFO, a vote
favoring production controls is a
clear signal to legislators that
farmers are willing to reduce
wheat acreage if they can be
assured of enough profit to keep
them on the farm.
But whether or not the nation’s
growers favor production controls
is a moot point at present, since
Secretary of Agriculture Bichard
Lyng has already indicated that no
such controls will be instituted for
1987.
Although ballots will be mailed
to all wheat producers, only those
with an acreage base of at least 40
acres will have their votes of
ficially tallied.
Ranking 27th in wheat
production nationally, Penn
sylvania posted record yields last
year when the state’s 210,000 acres
of wheat yielded a per-acre
average of 48 bushels. Penn
sylvania grows mainly soft red
winter wheat used by the bread
and baking industries.

Program. Members must keep
adequate records to insure positive
identification of the daughters of
LJS bulls and their con
temporaries. They must also
establish a priority in the timely
use of the semen.
All potential members will be
mailed membership information in
the near future. Additional
membership forms and in
formation may be obtained from
Ginger Myers, Helene Dreisbach,
David Chamberlain, or Glenn
Kenny. A general membership
meeting is scheduled for Wed
nesday afternoon, September 24, at
1 p.m. at the Farm Show Building.
The PA State Jersey Sale will be
held at 6 p.m. that same evening.

Executive Secretary, Maurice
Core, said that the club was
thrilled by the formation of the
group. Stated core, “Hopefully
Liberty Jersey Sires helps to
achieve one of the long-range goals
of the club; that is to sample more
good, young sires. One our
priorities set at our 1985 field staff
conference was to try to get one
new sampling group operational
that year. That goal was reached
with the implementation of
Dixieland Sires. We renewed that
goal this year and it now looks like
Liberty Jersey Sires will be this
years group. It’s the kind of
program that will be good for
everyone involved.”
