Karen Sheitzer to Promote Milk in Juniata County

MIFFLINTOWN - Karen
Sheitzer was crowned Juniata
County Dairy Princess, in front of
100 plus spectators, at the Mif
flmtown Fire Hall on June 6.
Karen, the 20 year old daughter of
James and Audrey Sheitzer,
Mifflintown, is a graduate of
Lampeter-Strasburg High School
in Lancaster County.
Alternate Dairy Princess was
Christen Weaver, also of Mif
flintown. Sixteen-year-old Christen
will be a senior at Juniata High
School and is the daughter of A.
Lee and Margaret A. Weaver.
Encouraged by the dairy
promotion committee to enter the
contest, the 1986 Dairy Princess
said she hopes to encourage people
to use dairy products. Her goal is
to be willing and enthusiast about
promoting dairy products for her
county.
Karen is presently employed on
the family dairy farm where she is
the eldest of four children, two
brothers and one sister. The family
milks 47 cows.
While in high school, Karen was
active in FFA, basketball, track
and the county 4-H club. Other
activities and interests include
Cedar Grove Youth Fellowship,
baking, and, of course, farming.

Each of the two girls presented a
creative skit on the promotion of
the dairy industry.
Karen’s skit showed her as a
mother pushing her baby through a
supermarket pointing out the
nutritive values of dairy products.
Christen portrayed an angel sent to
Mifflintown to remind us of the
value of milk products.
The Alternate Dairy Princess
entered the contest because of a
childhood goal. Christen’s school
and community activities include
chorus, band, 4-H dairy, beef,
sheep, and swine clubs,
cheerleading, youth group, pianist
and dairy judging team.
Christen helps with chores on the
family swine farm where a unique
computer system is used. Christen
has shown the Grand Champion
Steer at the Juniata County Fair
for the past three years. The
college bound senior will help the
Princess in promoting the dairy
industry.
Miss Shertzer was crowned 1986
Juniata County Dairy Princess by
Angela Colyer, the 1984 Juniata
County Dairy Princess. Miss
Colyer said in a very sincere
speech that she was grateful for
her reign as Princess and being a
spokesperson for the dairy in
dustry. She gave her full support to
the new Princess.

The pageant opened with a milk
punch reception and ended with a
sundae bar. Over 70 patrons
supported the contest.
The 1986 Dairy Princess Pageant
was co-sponsored by the Juniata
County Holstein Club and the
Juniata County Dairy Promotion
Committee. Lloyd Ebersole was
Master of Ceremonies for the
evening and gave the traditional
toast to the new princess.
Judges for the pageant were:
William Bradford, a Lewistown
dairy farmer; Denise Hall, a
marketing coordinator for Sire
Power, Tunkhannock; Beth
Raney, an extension agent and
former Venango County Dairy
Princess, Pine Grove Mills.
Entertainment for the evening
was provided by the Texas Hollow
Reunion.
