812-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 14,1986 Rve to Compete in Lebanon County Deity Princess Contest ANNVILLE - In celebration of June Dairy Month, the Lebanon County Milk Promotion Committee is sponsoring the 1986 Lebanon County Dairy Princess Contest. This year’s contest will be held June 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Annville Elementary School. Five Lebanon County girls will be participating. To be eligible to compete for the title of dairy princess, a girl must be the daughter of a dairy farmer, dairy farm manager or herdsmen, be employed on a dairy farm herself, or at least two dairy animals. This year’s contestants are Susan Elliott, Kelly Heisey, Heather Hemley, Tammy Lasher, and Shelby Martin. Susan Elliott, 16, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Elliott, R.DJ4, Lebanon. She has com pleted her junior year at Annville- Cleona High School where she participates in FFA, field hockey, the Varsity Club, National Honor Society, Chorus, Chorale, Madrigal Singers, SADD, the school musical and speech con tests. Susan also is active in the NoSoAnn 4-H Dairy Club and the youth group at Fontana Christian Fellowship. Future plans include attending college to major in Early Childhood Education. The Elliott’s have a herd of 35 Holstein cows on their 74 acre farm. Kelly Heisey, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Heisey, Jr., recently graduated from Cedar Crest High School. Her school activities include National Honor Society, Key Club, Pep Club, Astronomy Club, Soccer Club, chorus pianist and was named the Outstanding Senior in 4-H Club and to Who’s Who in American Students. Kelly is vice president of the Lebanon County 4-H Livestock Club, a member of the 4-H Board of Directors and attends Midway Church of the Brethren where she sings in the youth choir, ac companies the junior choir and is assistant church organist. Kelly plans on attending Thompson Institute to pursue a career as a medical secretary. The Heisey’s recently dispersed of their herd of Holstein cows. They raise corn and hay on their 153 acre farm. Heather Hemley, 20, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delmas Hernley, R.DJ2, Lebanon. A 1984 graduate of Northern Lebanon High School, she is planning to attend Delaware Valley College to study Dairy Husbandry. While in high school, Heather was active in the band and FFA holding the offices of secretary, vice president and county reporter. She also is a member of the Norlebco 4-H Dairy Club, the Frederickson Legion Auxiliary, Fredericksville Fire Company Auxiliary, and St. John’s Lutheran SaUton Co. Dtky Princess Contest Sot For Jane 21 DUSHORE Two contestants will compete for the Sullivan County dairy princess title June 21 during the dairy princess parade to be held at 7:15 p.m. in downtown Dushore. The contestants are Cherie Lynn Brown and Lynn Hembury. Cherie Lynn Brown is the 16- year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerrod Brown of Shunk. She has completed her junior year at Sullivan County High School and has been in 4-H and Girl Scouts. Both Cherie Lynn and her older brother, Richard, help with the farm work on their parents’ farm. The Browns have a mixed herd of registered and grade Holsteins. The main crops are corn, oats and hay. Lynn Hembury is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Hembury. Dushore. She has three older brothers, two of whom work on the farm, and a younger sister. Kelly Heisey Tammy Lasher Church where she is in the choir and youth group. In 1984, Heather was named Outstanding Ayrshire Girl in Pennsylvania and placed second in the national contest. She is presently employed by Darkes’ Greenhouses. The Hemley’s have a herd of 42 Ayrshire and Holstein cows on their 66 acre farm. Tammy Lasher, 18, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lasher, R.D.#4, Lebanon. Tammy is a 1986 graduate of Annville- Cleona High School and is em ployed on the dairy farm of Ken neth Mase. While in high school she was a FFA member and is a Sunday School teacher and in volved in the youth group at Fontana Christian Fellowship. Shelby Martin, 17, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Martin, 39 Golf Rd., Myerstown. She has just completed her junior year at Eastern Lebanon County High School where she is a member of the FHA and FBLA. Shelby is considering attending a two-year business school after graduation. She attends Gingrich Mennonite Church. The Martin’s milk 70 Holstein cows on their 260 acre farm. The current reigning dairy princess is Miss Tonya Johnson, daughter of Jane Showers, 143 Spruce Park, Lebanon. Lynn, 16, has completed her junior year at Sullivan County High School. She was vice president of the junior class. Her other activities are band, cheerleading and 4-H. The Hemburys have a registered Holstein herd of 120 cows on test and a replacement herd of about 130 animals. They farm about 450 acres. The main crops are com and alfalfa. During March and April a theme contest for the 1986 parade was held. The winning theme “Sullivan By harnessing a squash to a weight-lifting device, a farmer in Massachusetts found out that the squash exerts over 5,000 pounds per square inch of pressure as it grows. Heather Hernley Shelby Martin Throughout the past year, Tonya has been promoting the dairy industry throughout the county by means of speaking engagements, school presentations and radio spots. She has promoted the in dustry at supermarkets and shopping centers and through literature distribution. Mrs. Barbara Lentz is the chairman of the Lebanon Gouty Milk Promotion Committee. The public is invited to view the dairy princess contest which will con clude with “make your own sundae bar.” County Milk Does it All,” was submitted by Joann Wilstie of Eagles Mere. Another event planned to honor dairy farmers is a Twilight Meeting, to be held June 14 at Tall Spruce Farm, R 1 Forksville. The farm is owned by the parents of the 1985 Dairy Princess, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Higley. The meeting, co-sponsored by the June Dairy Month Committee and SIRE Power, offers the public a chance to visit a working dairy farm.
