Thinning Vegetable ■ Plants It’s important to thin the plants in your vegetable garden while the plants are still small so as not to disturb the roots of the remaining plants. Ac cording to Jeff Jabco, Delaware County Cooperative Extension agricultural agent, cucumbers, melons and squash will be ready for thinning as soon as one true leaf has fully expanded. Don’t pull, but pinch off or cut the plants to be discarded. Move extra soil toward the remaining plants immediately after thinning. Thinning is im portant because crowded plants compete with each other, grow spindly and are usually worthless. You should thin carrots as soon as the plants become well established so they stand about one inch apart. Then you allow them to develop until they are large enough to be eaten. You can pull alternate plants leaving more room for those that are left. As soon as sweet corn plants are four inches high, thin them to stand seven to eight inches apart in the row for early varieties and 10 to 12 inches apart for late, long season varieties.
