Carroll County Team Tops Md. Dairy Bowl Competition COLLEGE PARK, Md. - This year’s eleventh annual Maryland 4-H dairy bowl contest, held at the University of Maryland in College Park, featured a new set of rules and procedures. But results of the senior youth division bore striking resemblance to those of seven years ago. The victory marks only the second time that Carroll County has won the right to represent Maryland in regional and national 4-H dairy bowl competition. Kathy Weant, 16, of Longville also is a member of this year’s Carroll County senior 4-H dairy bowl team. Her cousin, Todd Weant, then 15, served with Anne Powel on the county’s first state champion senior 4-H dairy bowl team seven years ago. Other members of this year’s Carroll County senior 4-H dairy Route 30 West at the Centerville Exit. bowl team are Shane Sch wartzbeck, 16, of Union Bridge, and Tonna M. Caple, 18, of War fieldsburg. Gary Dell, 17, of Cranberry is the alternate team member. Coaching this year’s Carroll County 4-H dairy bowl teams are Roger and Loretta Wright of Bloom. The 1979 coach was Mrs. Karen Hobson of Taneytown. Frederick County salvaged a decisive victory in this year’s statewide junior 4-H dairy bowl competition, showing that it still has power potential for senior contests in future years. Members of the champion junior 4-H dairy bowl team are Andi Raber, 13, of Woodsboro; Sonny Williams, 14, of Johnsville; Lacy Flook, 14, of Middletown, and Stacey Guyton, 14, of Brukittsville. Team coach was Joseph W. Raber of Woodsboro. Montgomery County won run nerup honors in the state junior 4-H dairy bowl knowledge competition. Howard County placed second in the senior contest. This year’s state champion senior 4-H dairy bowl team from Carroll County is now eligible to represent Maryland in national competition, set for November 8, during the North American In ternational Livestock Exposition I Twin Valley FFA’ers Poultry Judging Four members of the Twin Valley FFA Chapter recently participated in the Eastern Penn- at Louisville, Ky. By that time, the team captain Nancy Powel, will have traveled to Scotland as a member of Maryland’s 1985 national cham pionship 4-H dairy cattle judging team. The Maryland team is scheduled to represent the United States in international youth competition at the Royal Highland livestock show on June 18 near Edinburgh. Nancy won both the Sire Power and John L. Morris trophies last year at the Maryland State Fair by placing first overall and in breed judging during the state senior 4-H cattle judging contest. Her father, William R. Powel 111, was the state champion 4-H dairy cattle judge in 1954. Nancy’s brother, Tom, and his twin sister, Anne, placed first and third, respectively, in senior 4-H dairy cattle judging at the 1979 state fair. Tom Powel is now a graduate student in dairy science at North Carolina State University. Anne is a graduate student at Cornell, studying reproductive physiology of dairy cattle. Eugene Bendig of Uniontown, the Powel family farm operation is known as Unicorn Associates, raising purebred Guernsey and Holstein dairy cattle. sylvania FFA Poultry Judging contest sponsored by Weavers Poultry of New Holland. Students who participated in this contest, hosted by the Grassland FFA Chapter at New Holland, were required to complete 14 different skill areas. Following the competition Troy Gieringer was awarded a third place finish among the 18 Berks County contestants, with Butch Harrison finishing tenth. Other Twin Valley contestants were Jeff Ortlip and Bob Bell.
