Omaha Weekly
Thursday, May 22
Report Supplied by USDA
Slaughter steer and heifer prices
turned 1.50-2.00 lower from last
week’s closing levels. A sluggish
beef trade coupled with an ex
panded slaughter and the up
coming holiday period proved too
burdensome for maintaining last
week’s price levels. Buyers were
still rather selective with best
demand on those steers under 1300
lbs. and promising relatively few if
any yield grade 4’s. Slaughter cows
1.00- lower. Slaughter bulls
steady.
Estimated 5 day receipts 7,900
compared to 8,911 last week and
10,912 last year. Slaughter steers
accounted for 50 pet of receipts,
slaughter heifers 40 percent,
slaughter cows 6 percent and
feeder cattle 2 percent.

Pork: Red Meat
or White?
Nearly all consumers
see beef as being a red
meat and consider
chicken and fish to be
white meats. A National
Pork Producers Council
study reports some
disagreement about
pork’s color, however. A
surprising 37 percent of
consumers surveyed
viewed fresh pork as a
white meat and 9 per
cent weren’t sure. Pork
up to this point has
traditionally been called
one of the red meats by
the meat industry itself.
