ammonium sulfate to Landmaster
and Roundup herbicides for
control of annual weeds can give
farmers a hedge against un
favorable weather conditions,
according to latest research find
ings.
Monsanto Agricultural Company
recently added ammonium sulfate
to the labels of Landmaster and
Roundup when studies revealed
that the combination may improve
the performance of these her
bicides under adverse weather
conditions. Because cool, cloudy,
or wet weather cannot always be

ammonium sulfate to Landmaster
and Roundup as a precautionary
measure. The suggested rate of
ammonium sulfate is 17 pounds of
dry additive for every 100 gallons
of spray solution.
Clair Stymiest, crop specialist
with South Dakota State Univer
sity, has studied the combination
of Roundup and ammonium sulfate
for four years. He believes that
ammonium sulfate increases the
absorption of glyphosate, an active
ingredient in Landmaster and
Roundup herbicides.
“During the spring of 1983, the

effects of ammonium sulfate were
easily seen,” observes Stymiest.
“Herbicides applied alone
produced 35 percent control of
downy brome, but when am
monium sulfate was added, we
achieved up to 90 percent control.”
Stymiest notes that weather
conditions during this particular
year were cool.
Stymiest’s work with am
monium sulfate has been mainly
on fallow ground and ground prior
to planting of a no-till crop. He says
the ammonium sulfate/herbicide
combination also works well
against volunteer wheat and other
grassy weeds.
