What do you do on a Sunday
afternoon? Maybe you visit
friends, read the Sunday paper,
f take a nap or watch television.
This past Sunday I broke from
traditional activities and had a
real adventure. What did I do? A
group from the North Museum in
Lancaster and I went whitewater
rafting on the Lehigh River. It was
like riding a bucking bronco for 18
miles.

After a hearty 6 a.m. breakfast,
we were bused to the rafting
headquarters and fitted with a wet
suit. It was skin tight from chin to
ankle and on our feet we wore
heavy rubber booties. Our raft slid
down a steep incline and after we
climbed in, we started on an un
forgettable experience.
As the water was 8 feet above
normal, we accomplished the run
in four hours instead of the ususal
five or six hours. The big rocks that
usually stick five or six feet out of
the water were hidden and only a
few were visible. They were just
waiting to “get” us.
I've never worked so hard on a
Sunday as we had to that day-it
was paddle or else. I was in front of
Day set for May 15
MEDIA The Delaware County

Day is planned for May 15th at the
Lima United Methodist Church.
The morning will be devoted to
“Designing and Making Critters”
- the natural decorations that
have made the Brandywine Valley
so famous at Christmas time. You
will be kept up-to-date with cl rrent

session. Exhibits of items made in

a five-woman rubber raft. As we
paddled through the rapids, we
were often hit full force with a wall
of water and almost dislodged
from our round rubber perch.
Three men fell in and I saw one
woman fall in who lost her glasses.
I decided that if I fell in I would not
lose mine. Well, my time came and
as I headed for the deep, I grabbed
the paddle in one hand and my
glasses in the other. When I sur
faced, everyone and his brother
were yelling directions at me.
“Keep your feet headed down
stream so that you don’t hit your
head on a rock, grab the rope, do
the scissors kick, etc.” Finally a
raft with five men in it pulled me
out of the raging waters after I
grabbed unto a kayak. I helped
,them paddle until they could
return me to my companions who
were concerned about me since
they had not seen me being
rescued.
I would recommend this ad
venture for young folks and risk
taking older ones. Even then, pick
a day when the water is not so
tumultuous. We certainly got our
money’s worth.
Extension workshops will be on
display.
Lunch will be served.
Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the
program is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The cost is $5.25 and the
registration is due by May 7th.
