outstanding members et annual banquet
EAST PETERSBURG - The
Manheim Young Farmers recently
held their annual awards banquet
at the Hempfield Church of
Brethren.
This chapter of young farmers is
the second largest in the state with
125 member.
Stedale Farms, owned by Steve
and Dale Hershey, received the
award for the highest rolling
average for milk with the
production of 21,844 pounds of
milk. They were also honored by
the award for high milk production
for a two year old with the record
of 22,357 pounds of milk.
The rolling herd average for fat
recognition went to Nelson Wenger
and his herd’s record of 733 pound
of fat.
An increase of 3,067 pounds of
milk over last year’s performance
captured the award of highest
improvement in milk for Ken
Miller.
Wayne Erb of Wil-Am Dairy and
Poultry Farm was honored for his
achievement of producing a dozen
eggs on 3.49 pounds of feed.
Lamar Miller was honored for
his production of 41.6 tons of corn
silage per acre. Also honored were
the Balmer Brothers, Dale and
Cletus, for producing 206.8 bushels
of ear com per acre.
Hie high shelled com production
award went to Dudley Rohrer with
his record of 160 bushels per acre.
Rohrer also receive both early and
double crop soybean production
awards. This past year he made
54.7 bushels per acre with his early
crop and 42.7 bushels per acre with
the double crop.
Donald and Sheryl Wenger were
honored for their community
service. Donald is the current vice
president of the Young Farmers.
He is also active in the Brown
Swiss Association and serves on
many church and community
boards.
The results of the election of
officers are: president, Dennis
Kulp; vice president, Donald
Wenger; treasurer, Lamar Miller;
assistant treasurer, Dennis
Shellenberger; secretary, Earl
Geib; assistant secretary, Larry
Hershey; and public relations,
JereSwarr.
Northern Lebanon FFA honors
FREDERICKSBURG - Over
two hundred Future Farmers of
America and their supporters
turned out March 6 for the annual
banquet of the Northern Lebanon
High School FFA chapter, held in
the school.
Eugene Kreitzer, chapter
president, conferred honorary
membership degrees on several
adults for service or helping to
advance vocational agriculture.
Among the recipients were Mr.
and Mrs. Gerald Long, Mr. Robert
Hunter, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis
Hetrick, Mr. Paul Reinbold, Sr.,
Mrs. Charlotte Flecher, and Mrs.
Elizabethann Gingrich.
Taking chapter Star Farmer
Awards were Kathy Blatt and
Dave Lentz, greenhand; Sherry
Donmoyer, tenth grade; Eugene
Kreitzer, eleventh grade; Mark
Long, twelfth grade; and Matt
Hetrick, agribusinessman. The
Star Awards were presented by
Heather Hemley, last year’s state
reporter.
Gretchen Oberst, chapter ad
visor, presented retiring officer
awards to Matt Hetrick, Mark
Long, and Brenda Reinbold. She
also presented chapter trophies to
Mark Long, public speaking and
swine; Laura Harding, dairy and
com yield and quality; Brenda
Reinbold, beef; Matt Hetrick,
tractor driving and sheep; Joe
Manheim Young Farmers honor

Harding for their honor roll status.
Nelson Bomgardener, the
chapter’s 1984-85 president,
presented the Keystone Farmer
Degree to Kunkle, Sweinhart,
Long, and Harding. Certificates of
Steele to participate in ag exchange
WASHINGTON, NJ - Jay Steele
of Broadway, NJ, will participate
in the FFA Work Experience
Abroad program beginning in
September
the program is an international
educational exchange between the
Future Fanners of America and
rural youth organizations in other
countries. Steele will gain
agricultural work experience for
six months in one of the 25 ex
change countries.
By living and working with a
family, Steele will have the op
portunity to leam about their way
of life, exchange ideas about
agriculture, and contribute to
international understanding.
Star Fanner
appreciation were given to adults
for assisting the chapter.
Recognized were Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Donmoyer, Mr. and Mrs. Jay
Blatt, Mr. Bruce Kilmoyer, and
Mr. Richard Folmer.
Ann Lansberry, a former Cedar
Crest FFA member who is now
serving as state FFA secretary,
gave a speech to the group on how
to be better FFA members.
While a student at Warren Hills
Senior High School, Steele par
ticipated in a variety of FFA ac
tivities. In 1982 he joined the
livestock judging team and placed
third in the state competition.
Following this, he received his
Greenhand Degree and attended
his first FFA State Convention.
Other accomplishments include
placing first in the State Livestock
Judging Competition and receiving
his New Jersey State Farmer
degree.
Steele is the son of Joseph and
Virginia Steele of Broadway. His
Warren Hills FFA Chapter advisor
and vocational agricultural in
structor is Mr. Robert Sills.
