' March29,l9B6 Wayne cow shines at Red and White Show LANCASTER The grand champion of the Spring Red and White Show was the four year old, C Mount Haven Crystan Reta-Red. This was only the second time she was exhibited by owners James and Joan Slocum, Susquehanna, Wayne County. Her previous tanbark experience was the Hartford County Fair where she took first in her class. The Slocum’s had a completely black and white herd until last year. They sold half of their herd at that point and bought red and whites at Joan’s insistence. She does all of the milking and prefers red and whites because “they’re different and you don’t see them all the time.” Presently their herd averages 17,644 pounds of milk with mainly first calf heifers. The year’s champion, who the judge Mike Barnes described as having a long open body and wide frame, is 63.5 inches tall. This height advantage prevented Joan from showing the champion cow herself. She felt she would be unable to hold the cow’s head that high for any length of tim£ Marty Unholzer helped the Slocums by serving as leadsman of the champion. Reserve grand champion honors were garnered by Meyerose Farm’s entry, Hastings Top Barbara. This cow was entered in the 100,000 pound milk lifetime production class. Judge Barnes describe the reserve champion as “a picture of what an aged cow should be. She has a snug udder with excellent teat placement.” Ken Myer of Myerose Farm, Elizabethtown, showed this cow because “she is the best cow in the herd and classified at 92 points.” She has been fresh since August International Red LANCASTER - The Eighth International Red and White Sale was appropriately named as sales went to three nations, Canada, Ecuador and the United States.
