LOUIS, MO - The board of directors of the National Com Growers Association (NCGA) voted for a unanimous reaf firmation of its support for the nation’s fuel ethanol program at its recent board meeting in Washington, D.C. “In noting the welcome relief and favorable economic forecasts resulting from declining crude oil, gasoline and heating oil prices, NCGA directors from 17 states expressed concern that the current energy market decline may en courage policy complacency with regard to long-term energy supply and security,” said Dain Friend, NCGA president. “The reality of fossil fuel depletion was starkly demon strated with gasoline shortages twice in the last dozen years,” Friend continued. “The U.S. is STORAGE SHEDS 3890 Oregon Pike Leola, PA 717-656-8380 or Criders Dairy Equipment §hippensDurg, PA 717-532-2196 WATER WATER even more vulnerable today in that we consume 25 percent of the world’s oil production but the U.S. holds only 4 percent of the proven oil reserves. “Against this backdrop, the U.S fuel ethanol industry supplied ? percent of all motor fuels utilized in 1985. This volume of fuel was produced in the U.S. utilizing 240 million bushels of U.S. com as the feedstock, representing a 40 percent volume increase over 1984 This resulted in a savings of ap proximately 8 million barrels of crude oil imports valued at ap proximately $2OO million. “In light of this performance, the NCGA recognizes the increasing value and importance of continued fuel ethanol production increases for the benefit of U.S. consumers, the general economy and US agriculture,” said Friend.
