UNIVERSITY PARK - Six
Penn State agronomists - three
current faculty members and
three professors emeriti - are
among a group of Fellows of the
American Society of Agronomy
who were recently named Crop
Science Society of America
(CSSA) Fellows. Recipients were
Richard R. Hill Jr., Gerald A.
Jung, Harold G. Marshall, John E.
Baylor, Howard B. Sprague and
John B. Washko.
These individuals had previously
been honored as Fellows of the
American Society of Agronomy
(ASA). CSSA, a society affiliated
with ASA, in initiating its own
Fellows program, conferred its
Fellow award on members who are
currently Fellows of ASA. In the
future, Fellow award nominations
for CSSA and ASA will involve
independent selection processes.
Fellow awards, the highest
presented by CSSA, are given on
the basis of professional
achievement and meritorious
service.

Drs. Hill, Jung and Marshall are
research agronomists associated
with the U.S. Department of
Agriculture and the Agricultural
Research Service. They also serve
as adjunct professors in the
Department of Agronomy.
Dr. Hill is location leader of the
Agricultural Research Service
program at University Park and
director of the U.S. Regional
Pasture Research Laboratory. His
research interests include
breeding for improved disease
resistance and forage quality in
alfalfa.
Dr. Jung served as research
leader of the U.S. Regional
Pasture Research Laboratory at
University Park. His research on
physiology and management of
forages and crops includes studies
of climatic, soil-related and
genetic factors that affect plant
growth.
Dr. Marshall, who was the first
Feeder Lamb sale slated
NEWARK, DE - A feeder lamb
sale will be held on Saturday,
March 22, at Hickory Hill Farms,
the Delaware State College
Research Center on Route 42 in
Cheswold. Lambs will be on view
from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., with the
sale starting promptly at 10.
Shortly before it starts,
University of Delaware acting
extension livestock specialist
Richard Barczewski will present a
brief program on how to handle
your lamb when you get it home.
The sale is an opportunity for
Delaware 4-H and FFA members

coordinator of Penn State’s Center
for Cereals Research, has studied
the improvement of oats and
buckwheat through breeding,
genetics and cytogenetics. In
recent years his research has
focused on intensive management
of wheat for high yields.
Dr. Baylor, former professor of
agronomy extension, who retired
in 1983, was primarily responsible
for developing extension
educational programs on forage
crop improvement. He also served
as coordinator of extension
agronomy programs.
Dr. Sprague retired as head of
the agronomy department in 1964.
His subsequent work involved
consulting in developing countries
of the tropics and subtropics as
well as writing technical bulletins
on pasture and range management
in warm climates.
Dr. Washko, former professor of
agronomy, retired in 1977. His
teaching and research interests
included management of forage
crops, pastures and grasslands.

project to buy a 4&- to 60-pound
lamb to show at this summer’s
state fair.
“This is a good project for 4-
H’ers,” says state 4-H leader
Marty Butterfield. “All that’s
needed to raise a lamb is a small
shed to provide shelter, a secure
area for exercise and a source of
food and water.”
The sale is being sponsored by
the Delaware Sheep and Wool
Producers Association and the
Delaware Cooperative Extension
Service.
