the youth program. The Hacks are
instrumental in setting up the milk
shake booth at the Ag Progress
Days. This is the major fund raiser
for the youth association.
The fun auction of Guernsey
novelty items capped off the
agenda for the meeting. Proceeds
from this auction were used tc
cover meeting expenses. The total
for this auction was $954 on 32
items. The high selling item was a
set of collectors Golden Guernsey
Milk glasses.

dairy farmers, but for Joseph
Ferris it’s a reality.
Ferris from New Wilmington,
Lawrence County, attains this
price by shipping his Guernsey
milk to the New Wilmington
Cheese Plant. Here he is paid on
the Federal Order 36 price plus a
standard bonus of $1.34.
This bonus is paid on all milk
that has a minumum of 3.5 percent
protein and 4.5 percent fat. This is
a minumum level and no dif
ferential is paid on levels above

The milk that Ferris usually
ships tests at 3.6 percent protein
and 4.75 percent fat, well over the
requirements.
Ferris estimates that by ship
ping 60,000 pounds of milk mon
thly, he is able to net an additional
$750.
This mutually beneficial union
between Ferris’ Summerfield
Farms Guernseys and the cheese
plant started at the beginning of
1984. Prior to learning about the
cheese plant, he shipped his milk to
a regular fluid milk market.
“Now I’m paid for what’s in the
milk,” Ferris commented, “...the
total solids way.”
Wisconsin and California have
been pricing milk that way for
sometime now he added.
Presently, however, the fluid milk
market does not cater to the total
solids in milk. Therefore, he feels it
will be some time before we are
able to have similar pricing for all
