Winter rye can
LEESPORT - “Cover crops
provide a vegetative cover to
protect the soil against erosion
during winter when the soil may be
bare and unprotected”, says John
Fior of the USDA Soil Conservation
Service. Cover crops are seeded in
the existing crop just before or
soon after harvest.
“Winter rye is one of the most
widely grown cover crops in
Southeastern Pennsylvania”, says
Fior. It can be sown in standing
com with a forage harvester or
helicopter or conventionally sown
after the com is harvested. Rye is
usually sown in late summer and
fall from July through October. It
should become established before

save your soil
the ground freezes.
Rye does not require as much
seedbed preparation as wheat and
other cereal grains. It does much
better on droughty, less fertile
soils than wheat and barley. It
germinates rapidly and makes
strong vigorous root and top
growth in a short period of time
under a wide range of growing
conditions. Competing weeds are
less likely to be a problem. Rye is
more resistant to low winter
temperatures than wheat and
barley. It will grow during tem
porary thaws throughout the
winter.
“Rye provides a living green
mulch cover over winter that
produces an excellent residue fc
planting no-till corn when it is
sprayed with herbicide,” says
Fior. Rye extracts excess soil
water during fall and spring and
utilizes nitrates from the
preceding crop. Excess nitrate
losses from leaching are
prevented.
Rye is often plowed under in the
spring as green manure before
planting the next crop. It
decomposes rapidly and con
tributes substantial organic
matter to the soil. Soil fertility and
soil tilth are increased
significantly. Reduced tillage will
leave some of the residue on the
surface for soil protection when the
new crop is planted.
Rye is often taken off as ryelage
during early heading before
blossoming when it is full of sap
and fed to dairy cattle. Rye is
sometimes combined off after
heading for straw and grain,
leaving a stubble mulch which will
protect the soil until a new crop is
planted in the fall.
