Easton grower tops Maryland soybean contest COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A field of no-till, non-irrigated soybeans produced the top yield during 1985 among growers from five Eastern Shore counties participating in soybean improvement programs sponsored by the University of Maryland’s Cooperative Extension Service. For the sixth time in the last seven years, the state soybean championship has been accorded to a Talbot County farmer. Wesley R. Larry C. Thomas of Princess Anne (Somerset County) placed third in the overall standings with a yield of 63.8 bushels per acre. He planted Williams 82 full-season inoculated soybeans on May 21 in 36-inch rows. Last year’s state soybean champion, Charles T. (Tim) Bishop of Easton (Talbot County) placed fourth with a yield of 63.6 bushels per acre. He planted Jacques J-541 certified soybeans on June 12 in 19-inch rows. Bishop’s winning yield in 1984 set a state record of 71.6 bushels per acre. That mark was set with Jacques 130 full-season soybeans, also planted on June 12 in 19-inch rows. This compared with previous “top 10” averages of 62.87 bushels per acre in 1984 ; 62.54 in 1983, and 64.57 in 1982. 'Die latter mark set an all time state record. By contrast, the statewide average yield for all Maryland soybeans last year was 32 bushels per acre, tying the previous yield record set in 1978. This compared with statewide yield averages of 29 bushels per acre in 1984 and 1982. The 1983 statewide average was 26 bushels per acre, according to the Maryland-Delaware Crop Reporting Service. The official Maryland soybean yield contest has been conducted regularly for 15 years as part of the crop improvement programs of the University of Maryland’s Cooperative Extension Service. says Bill Brown, product manager.
