Lancaster Farming, Saturday, March 8,1986-
Ida’s
Notebook
Ida Risser
Finally my one winter project is
finished. I now have a red and blue
braided rug in our fireplace room.
But am I satisfied? No, I dash off to
a Goodwill Store to hunt wool
material for another rug. And I am
lucky as I arrive just two days
before the spring and summer
clothes are displayed. So I pick
some jumpers, suits, slacks and
skirts that are the proper colors for
a minimal price.
In order to have a break in my
work of basting and braiding, I
decide to try to make some order
out of a big camel-back trunk of
pictures. They had been sorted
previously, but more were added
from my mother’s collection
Many of them are of the seven
Shreiner sisters sitting in fallen
fruit trees. For some reason every
time that a cherry, apple or pear
tree was blown down in a storm,
my mother got out her camera and
took our picture.
Riding Clinic planned
CREAMERY - Susan Harris,
well-noted riding instructor and
author, returns to Pennsylvania
and Wise Acres Farm on March
7th, Bth, and 9th to share her
talents.
Harris will present Sally Swift’s
concepts of centered riding in her
Friday evening orientation and put
them to practice in her instruction
on Saturday and Sunday. It is an
opportunity to get in on the ground
floor of a technique helpful to all
riders and horses. The United
States Equestrian Team and other
of the nation’s top riders have
benefited from centered riding.

Some photos are of disasters that
we’d like to forget, such as my
father’s metal silo that broke in
half one night and surely was a
sorry sight as it had just been
filled. Another shows our barn
after a disastrous fire.
Others are of my husband
butchering three hogs beside a big
steaming kettle, one of my
grandfather stirring apple butter
and one of me skinning a groun
dhog. Of course, we recorded new
babies, graduations and weddings
too, plus family picnics.
I also have a lot of my mother’s
photographs taken about 1910 in
the village of Oregon along the
Lititz Creek. Most of the people
pictured are gone and the buildings
are being converted to other uses.
Some pictures of our immediate
family will be shared with our
children and others stored away
again. It was a nice interlude in ipy
winter activities.
The clinic will fulfill the popular
demand for introduction to cen
tered riding techniques. Auditors
should register in advance so that
we can accommodate you for the
Friday session. Saturday’s
sessions will consist of classes of 4
to 6 riders lasting one hour. Riders
may choose to ride on the flat or in
a jumping class or both. Each
session is $25. Sunday morning is
reserved for private lessons for
which the fee is $3O per hour.
Wise Acres Farms is located in
Hatfield. For more details on the
clinic contact Linda Newbauer at
(215) 723-8060.
