GEHRINGER PITTSBURGH The cows in the ballroom at the Sheraton were dancing to the sounds of the auc tioneer, William Kent, and Gayle Carson announcing the pedigrees, as the, Pennsylvania Holstein Convention Sale got underway. Marilyn Hilltop Hanover S S -ET received the top bid of the day, $9500, from Carl Spagnola, Pitt sburgh. Spagnola is a home builder from Shaler and owns a restuarant in Station Square, the mall next to the Sheraton. Spanola, who had been carefully looking the animal over all week in the Sheraton’s parking garage turned sale barn, really wanted .this “beauty” and plans to board her at a farm in Berlin, Pa. Hawked as one of the greats of the breed, she was consigned by John C. Sites, Jr. and Hardy Shore from New York, N. Y. Marilyn, is the result of the mating between S-W-D Valiant and The second highest animal at the convention sale was Golden Circle Pete Magic. She sold for $9,000 to Magic Partners from Tucson, Arizona. This top price was closely followed by that of Golden Circle Pete Magic, who sold for $9OOO to Magic Partners of Tucson, Arizonia. Magic, consigned by Paul and Sharon Fox of Rockwood, has an index of $lO2, 3339 M, and 148 F. She sold with a guarantee of five transferable embryos and was bred on December 2,1985 to S-W-D Valiant. The third highest priced cow to be sold was Willsholm Rotate Kelda, for the price of $B7OO. She is the offspring of the high TPI bull, Arlinda Rotate and Landsdown Elevation Kate. Kelda was consigned by North View Farm, Berlin, and was purchased by Michael LaPoe from Clare, Michigan. She was due to freshen two days after the sale with a Carlin-M Ivanhoe Bell calf. Ken Raney, Director of Membership Services, acknowledging the prices were lower than last year, stated the committee was “well pleased with prices considering the times.” The unofficial total for the sale reached $148,185. The sale was managed by the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, State College. Sale committee chairmen were Dan and Cathy Will. The Convention Sale which was well attended by Holstein en thusiasts, also attracted curious onlookers from the city of Pitt sburgh. As one person estimated, as high as one quarter of the capacity crowd were gawkers. These people included the Pitt sburgh media and intrigued city dwellers who didn’t know what was going on, but loved the fuss made over “cows, of all things.” Willsholm Rotate Ke.lda came in with the third highest bid of $8,700 from Michael J. Lapoe, Clare, Michigan.
