SMITHSBURG, Md. - A hand
made quilt, crafted in memory of a
young Washington County Holstein
boy, will be a highlight of the
Maryland State Holstein Con
vention sale on Feb. 22.
The one-of-a-kind quilt was
designed and sewn by Eva Martin
Smithsburg, R 2. Eva and her
husband Marlin are donating it in
memory of their teenage son
Kraig, killed two years ago in an
automobile accident. Proceeds
from the quilt are earmarked for
three separate memorials
benefitting dairy youth.
One third of the selling price will
be set aside for a special Kraig
Martin memorial fund, from which
about six Washington County 4-H
awards are to be presented an
nually.
A second third goes to the
Washington County Holstein Club,
establishing a memorial spon
sorship for a grand champion
fitting-showmanship award at the
club’s annual field day.
The Doty Remsburg fund,
established in memory of the well
known Maryland Holstein
promoter and sales manager, will
receive the final third. Funds from
the Remsburg memorial are used
to benefit the state’s 4-H dairy
teams.
While the quilt memorial had
been in the Martin’s plans for
many months, it wasn’t until the
Thanksgiving holiday weekend
that Eva finally put the design
together on paper. Gathering of the
fabrics for each part of the
pastoral setting took a few more

AIJSXANDRIA, VA. - National
officers of the FFA are traveling to
Japan for two weeks to gain an
understanding of international
agriculture.
The student leaders of the
nearly half-million member
vocational agriculture
organization left February 2 for a
look at Japan’s culture and
agricultural industry.
The international tour is being
sponsored by Mitsui & Company
(USA), based in Memphis, and
Mitsui & Co., Ltd. of Tokyo. This is
the seventh year Mitsui has
quilting by Marlin’s mother, Ada
Martin, also of Smithsburg.
Crafted primarily in shades of
green, the 94- by 100-inch quilt is
accented with a cheery red and
white pin striped bam, grayish
toned house and silos, and even
golden yellow grain bins. It is
appropriate for use on both double
and queen size beds.
Also available at the convention
will be more of Eva’s creations,
her own designed needlecraft kits
featuring Holstein cows.
“I became frustrated when I
went looking for needlework ideas
and found there were so few dairy
related ones,” says this talented
dairy farm woman.
Cross-stitched pillow kits and
needlepoint tissue box covers are
the first market test items for what
may develop into a business for
Eva.
“We love Holsteins" is the theme of two needlecraft kits
designed by Eva Martin. They will be making their debut at
the Maryland State Holstein Convention*

Tissue box covers are designed
to fit the smaller, square box.
