dressed weight basis, totaled 84.1
million pounds, up eight percent
from December 1984, according to
the Pennsylvania Crop -and
Livestock Reporting Service.
Beef slaughter, at 109.6 million
pounds liveweight, was up 20
percent from December 1984. Total
head slaughtered was 92,000, up 16
percent, and liveweight averaged
1,192 pounds, an increase of 39
pounds. Veal slaughter was 4.8
million pounds liveweight, 27
percent above last year. Calf
slaughter of 28,300 head was up 24
percent. The average liveweight
increased three pounds to 169
pounds.

State’s meat production up
Hog slaughter, at 33.4 million
pounds liveweight, was down 14
percent from a year earlier. Total
head slaughtered was 142,300,
down 11 percent; average
liveweight decreased seven pounds
to 234 pounds. Lamb and mutton
slaughtered was 1.1 million pounds
liveweight, down 22 percent. The
number slaughtered was 10,300,
down 24 percent. However, the
average liveweight increased
three pounds to 107 pounds.
U.S. commercial red meat
production in December totaled
3.14 billion pounds, up one percent
from December 1984. Comparing
December 1985 with December
1984, beef production at 1.85 billion
pounds was up one percent. Cattle
kill at 2.92 million head was down

sylvania are invited to particpate
in a special hay marketing project
sponsored by the Cooperative
Extension Service. Using funds
secured through Penn State’s
Small Farms Program, producers
can have their hay sampled, tested
and advertised for sale by hay
quality this market season.
This project is designed to open
up new marketing opportunities
for the producers whose gross
farm income is less than $50,000. In
addition to helping market hay,
this project also will fund a hay
newsletter and several hay
production/marketing meetings
