Small grains output ‘increased in ‘B5
HARRISBURG Pennsylvania
1985 production of all small grains
was above last yfear, according to
the Pennsylvania Crop and
Livestock Reporting Service.
Pennsylvania farmers established
new record yields for wheat, oats,
barley and rye during the 1985
season,
Production of winter wheat was
10.080.000 bushels, 21 percent
above last year. The 210,000 acres
harvested yielded an average of
48.0 bushels per acre. Rye
production from the 20,000 acres
harvested was 740,000 bushels, 28
percent above 1984. The average
yield per acre was 37.0 bushels, up
three bushels from last year.
Oats production was 21,000,000
USDA charges
Trenton packer
WASHINGTON - The U.S.
Department of Agriculture has
charged Royal Crest Meats, Inc., a
meat packer of Trenton, N. J., with
doing business without a bond.
The firm buys livestock for
slaughter at auction markets at
Hackettstown, N.J., Ephrata, and
Perkiomenville.
A USDA official said the firm
was notified that its $lO,OOO surety
bond was being terminated in
October and it would be necessary
to obtain a replacement bond in
order to legally remain in
business.
B.H. (Bill) Jones, head of
USDA’s Packers and Stockyards
Administration, said the firm has
continued to purchase livestock for
slaughter without filing a new
bond, despite the official warning.
Royal Crest Meats has a right to
a hearing on the federal ad
ministrative charges filed by
USDA under authority of the
Packers and Stockyards (P&S)
Act.
If the charges are proven, the
firm will be placed under a cease
and desist order, similar to' an
injunction. It could also be ordered
to pay a civil penalty.
The P&S Act is an antitrust, fair
trade practice and payment
protection law. It is designed to
maintain integrity in the
marketing of livestock, poultry
and meat, and economic law and
order in the marketplace.

acre. This is 11 bushels more per
acre than the previous record of
59.0 established in 1982. Barley
production was 4,340,000 bushels,
19 percent above last year.
Acreage harvested was 70,000 with
an average yield per acre of 62.0
bushels.
All tobacco production totaled
21.9 million pounds, two percent

United States production of oats
was above last year while wheat,
barley and rye production was
below 1984. Production of winter
wheat totaled 1.83 billion bushels,
11 percent below last year. Rye
production of 20.6 million bushels
was 36 percent below 1984. Oats
production at 518.6 million bushels
was nine percent more than last
year.
