E2-Unc*st*r Farming, Saturday, February 1,1986 HARRISBURG - Sixty-four farms were designated official Pennsylvania Century Farms during 1985, bringing the total number of Century Farms in the Commonwealth to 986. State Agriculture Secretary Richard E. Grubb said, “The Century Farms Program was established to help publicize the strengths and durability of our farm families which have con tributed so much to our Com monwealth’s economic and agricultural heritage. For more than 200 years our farm families have kept Pennsylvania growing better, as the leading agricultural state in the Northeast. Our 58,000 farm families produce more than $4 billion annually in farm products and help keep agriculture Pennsylvania’s number one in dustry.” To be recognized as a Penn sylvania Century Farm, the farm must be owned by the same family for 100 consecutive years to the date of application, and a family member must presently live on the farm. The farm must consist of at least ten acres of the original holding. The Century Farms Program has been coordinated by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture since its inception in 1976. The Secretary urged other Pennsylvania farm families who qualify for Century Farm honors to make application for the program and show their “Keystone Pride.” Applications can be obtained by writing to Century Farms, Press Office, Pa.
