Students imited to participate in Agricultural Ambassador Program SPOKANE, Wash. - President Ronald Reagan called for; “The broadest people-to-people ex changes in the history of American-Soviet relationships” during the Summit Conference in Geneva. Later, when addressing students at a high school in Maryland, he stated: “We should have no illusions that people-to people contact will solve all the problems that exist between us. The Soviet Union is not a democracy...” Reagan warned, “But these exchanges are a beginning to building a better world, one based on better human understanding.” High school and college students from throughout the United States will have the opportunity to par ticipate in such an exchange by applying to take part in the People to People Agricultural Student Ambassador Program. The delegation of students will also travel to England, Finland, and the European continent, where again they will leam about each nation’s agricultural, political, economic, and cultural background. They will also live for a week with a farm family in Holland, Denmark, West Ger many, or France. Farmstay families include their American guests in everyday activities, enabling the State Ambassador to gain a first-hand understanding of the ways people live and work in other cultures. For one week, students will have the opportunity to see agricultural technology and meet agricultural experts from over 110 countries. The conference schedule offers academic sessions; cultural ex cursions; visits to farms, factories, and research stations; and par ticipation in events such as the Royal International Agricultural Show. Prior to departure for Europe, students will convene for briefings in Washington, D.C., with representatives of the State Department, U.S. Department of Agriculture, the White House and other governmental agencies. These sessions include programs on American agricultural research and technology; presentations on cross-cultural communication; visits to various embassies for updates on current international relations; and briefings by People to People officials on the Student Ambassador’s role in promoting friendships between the United States and other countries. Young Americans have served as Student Ambassadors since 1963. The program is operated under the auspices of People to People International, a non political, private sector organization founded by President Eisenhower in 1956, to further international goodwill and un derstanding. President Reagan serves as Honorary Chairman of People to People International, and the student programs are ad ministered by eminent educators from throughout the country. The non-governmental nature of all People to People programs has proven central to their success. For that reason, no governmental funds are used in the program, and thus students are responsible for their own expenses.
