Recently I mentioned
misplacing a scrapbook. However,
since then I found the book and
filled it with newspaper clippings.
My mother had boxep of health
articles, poems and many
obituaries which she saved over a
period of many years. When I
sorted them, many of the yellow,
wrinkled ones were thrown away. I
think that putting things in a
scrapbook is a better way of
preserving them.
My great uncle was a retired
gentleman farmer for some 30
years. He was a man with many
interests and he had a valuable
coin collection. He also bought
every stamp that was ever issued;
he had a standing order with a
local postoffice for them. Beside
these two hobbies, he was a fine
photographer. And, he kept his
valuable items and some not so
valuable items in large scrap-
Handwoven clothing judged
HARRISBURG - Due to
popular demand, hand-woven
clothing was judged for the first
time at this year’s Farm Show.
“While the craft has never been
judged here, hand-woven clothing
is common at other state fairs,”
said Ruth Prest, Crawford County
extension agent. “Craftspeople
asked us to include this category
and there seems to be enough
interest to keep it in future shows.”
Hand-woven clothing is an open
adult class. Each project is judged

I was lucky enough to be able to
buy some of these when they were
inadvertantly placed among less
important papers. He had saved
old letters, 1840 tax receipts, 1734
draughts of his farm, Confederate
money and photographs of dif
ferent types of architecture in
Lancaster and surrounding towns.
Among my other scrapbooks are
some postcard albums which I
made from piles of cards that our
parents saved. Now all I need to do
is find the time to sit down and
enjoy them.
But I suppose it is good for us to
get away from the farm and
mingle with other people too. Last
week we spent a day at the Penn
sylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg
and I met some folks who had
come with a tour from Virginia. It
was interesting to talk to them
about their farming operations.

Franklin County Seeing Eye Club in second yeer
CHAMBERSBURG - Franklin
County 4-H Seeing Eye Puppy Club
started the New Year with the
addition of a new puppy. On Dec.
30, Rhonda Carling returned her
first Seeing Eye Project puppy, a
one-year old German Shepherd, to
the Seeing Eye Center in
Morristown, N.J., for" formal
training by a professional dog
trainer.
The Garling family received a
tour of the Seeing Eye Training
School and Breeding Farm where
Rhonda and Rodney Garling
received their next Seeing Eye
Puppy, a 2%-month-old black
Labrador Retriever named
“Dora.”
During 1986 this puppy will live
in the Carling’s house, sleep beside
Rhonda’s bed, and go to as many
meetings and family outings as
possible. The puppy will be taught
to walk on a leash and will visit
area banks, the post office, and
various business establishments.
At the January 4-H County
Council meeting Rhonda and
Rodney Garling presented a slide
presentation about the Seeing Eye
School and Training Center and
introduced Dora to council
members.
On Jan. 16 the new Seeing Eye
puppy joined the three other
Seeing Eye dogs for a 4-H
demonstration given to the
Franklin County Support Group for
Parents of Blind Children. At this
meeting Kelly Boyd, Denise and
Collene Kessler, and Rhonda
Garling gave talks and dog
demonstrations. The blind children
were then allowed to touch the
puppies.
