first-year competitor wins market tomb championship
HARRISBURG - The smallest
competitor in the showring took
home the biggest award in the
junior market lamb competition at
Farm Show Wednesday.
In his first year of Farm Show
competition, 10-year-old Joe
Kuzemchak of Pleasant Gap,
Centre County earned the
champion market lamb banner
with his 137-pound Suffolk wether.
A March lamb, the wether was
purchased from Jim Westhoven of
Ohio.
“He must just be one of those
lucky ones,” Joe’s mother, Gayle
said after the show.
But there’s more to winning than
luck. Gayle said Joe spent a lot of
time training his champion to
behave well in the showring.
The Kuzemchak family has had
winners in the Farm Show market
lamb competition before
daughter, Julie, won the coveted
award five years in a row, ac
cording to her father, Richard.
The reserve grand champion
went to a 132-pound lamb owned by
Kristen Chupp of Lancaster
County. Christen’s market lamb,
bred by B&B Livestock in Ohio,
was also named heavyweight
reserve champion.
Kristin is the 14-year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry
Weaver.
