Second flock
HARRISBURG - The State
Department of Agriculture has
announced that a flock of 17,800
roaster chickens in Snyder
County has been depopulated by
its owners.
Agriculture Secretary
Richard E. Grubb com
plimented the flock owners and
poultry industry for their ac
tion, noting that the industry
has shown a “willingness to
take the necessary measures to
avoid the tragic experiences of
1983-84.”
Grubb said the flock, located
near Freeburg, was less than a
quarter mile from another
small flock from which HSN2
avian influenza antibodies were
recovered last week.
The first flock was

the Snyder County area.
According to Grubb, the
second flock was tested early
last week, but no avian in
fluenza antibodies were found.
The flock became ill later in the
week and was retested. He said
the flock owner took the
initiative to depopulate the
flock while waiting for con

eliminate a potential source of
virus spread.
“We are continuing sur

the area, but the test results
from other farms have all been
negative,” Grubb said.

Inter-State requests price increase
SOUTHAMPTON - Interstate
Milk Producers’ Cooperative is
requesting the Pennsylvania Milk
Marketing Board to increase the
Area 6 Class I differential by $.25
per hundredweight.
The request is supported by the
dairy provisions contained in the
Food and Security Act of 1985 (the
Farm Bill). The legislation calls
for increases in Class I fluid milk
differentials in 35 of the 44 existing
federal order areas.
among
Federal Orders 4, 2 and 36. Class I
differentials in these orders will
increase by $.25, $.30 and $.lO,
respectively.
A change in Area 6 Class I dif
ferentials is necessary, said Inter-
State Economist James Fraher, to
maintain competitive producer
prices between Federal Order 4, 2
and 36 and Area 6.

"We need to maintain proper
alignment between prices in Area 6
and the adjoining federal order
markets,” Frahersaid.
To do this and to reflect changes
in milk production costs relative to
prices, Inter-State is requesting
the Area 6 Class I differential to be
increased from its current level of
$2.10 to $2.35 per hundredweight.
“We would like to see the in
crease become effective May 1,
1986,” Fraher said, “to coincide
with the proposed increases in the
federal order Class I dif
ferentials.”
