    Swine breeders honor Henkel
HARRISBURG - In atMitton-to
selling their Farm Show bred gilt
champions on Monday, the state’s
purebred swine breeders took time
out to honor Strasburg pork
producer John Henkel for his
outstanding leadership and con
tributions to the swine industry.
Dennis Grumbine, president of the
Pennsylvania Swine. Breeders Co
op, presented Henkel with the
organization’s annual Penn
sylvania Swine Co-op Award.
In addition to raising Yorkshires
for breeding stock and research
purposes, Henkel was in
strumental in the formation of the

scheduled for Feb. 20 at
Harrisburg’s Penn Harris Motor
Inn) and is a past member of the
board of directors of the National
Pork Council.
Henkel recently stepped down
after a two-year term as president
of the Pennsylvania livestock
Association. At present, he serves
as a director of the Pennsylvania
Pork Producers Council, and
represents the state on the
National Pseudorabies Oversight
Committee.
Henkel was named one of the
state’s Master Farmers in 1961.

yesterday.
Paul McPherson of RD 1, New
Park, YORK COUNTY, was
champion of the shelled grain
regular harvest class. Joseph
Stump, RD 1, YORK, was second
and David Chilcote of Chilcote and
Peters, Stewartstown, YORK
COUNTY, was third.
Winner of the ear com regular
harvest class was Snyder Valley
Farm of RD 1, Parker, CLARION
COUNTY. Runnerup was Bruce
Bivens of FULTON COUNTY
followed by Burd Schantz of
Alburtis, BERKS COUNTY.
Thomas C. Dunlap of RD 4,
Jersey Shore, CLINTON
COUNTY, won the shelled grain - 3
acre plus harvest class. He was
followed by Richard Kreider of
LEBANON and Richard Fet
terman of Catawissa, COLUMBIA
COUNTY.
Wayne Reymeyer of RD 1, New
Freedom, YORK COUNTY, won
the shelled grain, regular harvest

meeting of the Farm and Home
Foundation of Lancaster County
will be held Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at
the Farm and Home Center.
Featured speaker will be Mike
King, who traveled by wheelchair
from Fairbanks, Alaska to
Washington D.C. last summer. A
native of Cochranville, King will
tell about the challenges he faced
as he traveled across America.
There will be a brief business
meeting and election of directors.
Tickets for dinner are $8 and can
be purchased by calling the Farm
and Home Center at 392-4911.
Ticket deadline is Jan. 22.
