Farm Show visitors treated to D
BY SUZANNE KEENE
HARRISBURG - Monday’s
Farm Show visitors had the op
portunity .to feast their eyes on
some of the state's best draft
horses as breeders from across the
state brought their top horses into
the large arena tor competition.
In the Belgian division of the
show judge Harold McMam of
Delmar, lowa, selected a five
year-old stallion owned by Corbly
Orndorff and his sister, Christine
Lemley of Greene County. A
homebred stallion, Orndorff’s
Congolaise Supreme was fast
year’s Farm Show champion and
earned the grand championship at
Keystone as well.
Corbly Orndorff said he is
considering retiring the stallion
from the showring, noting, “He’s
going to be our herd sire.” The
Orndorff’s have 36 registered
Belgians on their farm.
The judge turned to an entry
owned by Larry Orndorff of Adams
County for his champion mare.
The three-year-old mare, a
homebred entry, is due to foal in
March. Cheyanne’s Kay
Conqueror has been busy on the
show circuit this summer, placing
high in the Frederick and Howard
County Fairs in Maryland.
In the Clydesdale division of the
show, the champion stallion honor
went to a two-year-old entry owned
Corbly Orndorff and his champion Belgian stallion, Orn
dorff's Congolaise Supreme.
s his champion Clydesdale stallion,
two-year-old Greenleaf Rudy.
Windermere's Ceaser took championship honors for Gerald
Allebach in the Percheron stallion show.
by Edward Johnston of West
moreland County. Green Leaf
Rudy, who is the Johnston’s
foundation stud, was making his
showring debut The Johnstons
purchased him from Greenleaf
Farms m Canada last May
The Corl family of Centre County
claimed the champion mare honor
with their four-year-old Nor
thumberland Joy Due to foal in
May, the mare has both “draf
tmess” and femininity, Dail Corl
noted. “She’s feminine, but BIG 1 ”
she said.
The Corls have been in the draft
horse business for eight years and
have 10 Clydesdales on their farm.
Reserve champion mare in the
Clydesdale division went to
Abraham Allebach of Centre
County.
The Allebachs fared better in the
Percheron division, taking the
champion stallion rosette with a
homebred entry. Windermere’s
Ceasar was reserve grand
champion at Keystone and has won
every show he’s competed in ex
cept at the Royal Winter Fair.
“He wins his class every time,”
Gerald Allebach noted.
For the champion mare, show
judge Jon Bast of Cocolalla, Idaho
went to a homebred entry owned
by James M. Cole of Centre
County. Two-year-old
\jaet earned first place at the
Ohio State Fair as a weanling and
was junior reserve champion at
Farm Show last year

Plan manure storage systems
now for spring installation
LEESPORT This is a critical
time for farmers now that the
ground is frozen and partially snow
covered, says Roy Shryock of the
Soil Conservation Service. Animal
waste cannot be properly disposed
of in this type of situation. Runoff
from these conditions can cause
pollution of our streams and water
supplies.
Proper planning and installation
of various systems can help
alleviate this problem. Solutions to
reduce pollution include ear
thsided structures, holding tanks
of concrete or steel and lagoons for
milkhouse waste and barnyard
runoff.
Six months to a year of storage is
encouraged. This allows a farmer
to properly incorporate animal
waste into his cropping system.

Manure should be incorporated
into the soil as soon as possible
after spreading by plowing,
chiseling or disking into the soil.
Without incorporating manure into
the soil many nutrients are lost
into the air.
Manure testing and soil testing
programs are essential to, a sound
management program of
nutrients. This insures a proper
balance of nitrogen, phosphorus
and potash for proper fertilization
of crops to be grown.
Now is the time to plan your
system, have proper designs, and
management plans to be ready to
install this spring and summer.
For further information and
planning contact your local Soil
Conservation Service.
